Question re. eye goobers

Hi All.  Winston has recently had some eye goobers that are a bit concerning for me.  He normally just has a few white/gray/tan goobers in the inside corner of his eyes when he wakes up.  In the past week he's had big thick green/yellow goobers that coat his eye and require some effort on my part to get them all out of his eye.

Any ideas on what might have triggered the change?

I've checked his eyes and I don't see anything obvious causing irritation.  He's taking his usual course of allergy meds.  His ears have been a bit itchy, but nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year.  The goobers are the only NEW thing going on and I'm a bit concerned.

We appreciate any insight you might have!

Eye boogers can also be a sign of...

dry eye.  If they are green it could also be an infection.

that was my concern

the color change is what really had me alarmed.  I've seen similar goobers in some of the older, neglected rescues I pick up...I'm worried about both potentials (dry eye or infection).  I'm probably headed to the vet tomorrow (if he's in on St. Patrick's day), but it's always good to check in here to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Good idea to have it checked out...

our Oreo had nasty eye boogs and she did have dry eye, we had to put medicine in every day for her.  They can easily find out by using a simple test strip to see if there is tear production.  I have the same problem as a result of radioactive cancer treatments except for the booger part lol.

Yep ... agree

he should not have boogers in the morning and a color like green or yellow is a sign of infection. Depending on where you live and if it is your spirng allergy season then he may need to have daily eye drops (liquid tears).  A trip to the vet or opthomologist is in order.

Ozzy

Has had multipe eye issues--including corneal ulcer surgery.  He gets drops everyday--but at this time of year his allergies really act up and we get the boogers--so we double up the drops.
