Morning all!
Daisy was in yesterday for her spay surgery (she is 6 mo old.) During the procedure the vet noticed a small patch on her front leg, did a scraping and it came up positive for mange. Initially he suggested ivomectrin (probably spelled that wrong) but because she is on Comfortis, that is not an option. Next was a series of dips at 3 week intervals until she comes up clear of the mites. Will need to wait at least 2 weeks for her incision to heal before we do that.
My question is this...I have been doing my own research on the internet and there seems to be two very different schools of thought on puppy, localized, demodectic mange treatment:
1. Do nothing. Most cases in puppies with only 1-3 small areas will resolve themselves within 8 weeks. Suggest boosting the immune system with supplements....and watch.
2. Aggressively treat with medications and/or insecticide dips.
I am conflicted as to which course of treatment is best for us? The thought of dipping Daisy in poison makes me cringe and will only add to her stress. The thought of doing nothing is also concerning.
Any help/suggestions you all have would be really appreciated :-)
Much Thanks!
my daisy has it right
my daisy has it right now and I diped her and it is getting better but my daisy had it everywhere the dip worked great she was just really clingy for about 3 days ut ahead is good now I hope this helps

all dogs have mange
when the immune system is over taxed the mange mite pops out... vaccines,,,being spayed has taxed the immune system.....get some vit c some vit e and some probitics going...ingore your vet about all that posion...are you on a good grain free food??? i would also give some fresh salmon and sardines their very healthy.....
if you need more info just ask.....dipping your 6 month old is only cutting short her life....
Thank you!
Daisy is still eating puppy food a good brand but not grain free. Otis my other bully is on a grain free. Will start the change over immediately! Have you heard of Dynovite? We ordered it but have not started using it yet...seems to have a lot of good reviews...but don't they all?
Thank you again....I just had a horrible feeling about dipping a puppy in insecticide.
i know very little about kibble as i feed
a raw diet....but just build up her immunity....no dipping thats horrible
dipping
I don't get what's wrong with dipping for that ? I dipped my girl who is 5 months and she is perfectly fine and getting so much better my vet says if u don't get it under control it will just keep getting worse and than have to do the unthinkable ! please explain cuz the food thing didn't help my daisy just kept getting worse and y would a vet do something that would hurt ur baby ?

Depends on the severly
of the demodex. All dogs don't have mange...but all dogs have the mites. Mange is a result of the mites overwhelming the system. It is believed this happens when the immune systems gets compromised. Often thought to be the final vaccines given all at once with the rabies vaccine, surgeries, new homes, etc.
If it is localized which it sounds like in this case it is, then the immune system can be boosted and the dog can fight the mites themselves. Kind of like a cold or the flu. If it worsens then I would go to another step and start a medical treatment.
I personally would avoid the dipping. Dogs can get very sick from the dips. Although others have used ther dips very successfully. I have used oral ivermectin with good results. None are great IMO, but it does have to be gotten under control. I have only had one dog with Demodex.
I don't understand your vet. Does he think a dog has to be put down for demodex, if so maybe he needs to read some of the rescue stories of rehabilitated dogs that had demodex so bad they had no hair, just hard dried elephant skin. That is seriously a ridiculous statement from any vet.
How long did you use the Ivermectin?
My bully has been on it now for almost 4 wks. and we are not even 1/2 way thru the bottle!

6 - 8 weeks
If I remember right. Have you had the dog re-scraped/tested? They should rescrap every 2 weeks and after the 2nd scraping is clear you should be done.
Re-Phrase
After 4 weeks do a scraping, then do another scraping 2 weeks later. After the 2nd clear scraping you should be ok. I would also have the dog on a supplement to help build the immune system. (If I remember right this is what we did. It's been 5 years, short memory here :) ))
sorry to hear this.
if i was you i would e-mail judy wilson. you need to talk with her. she does know best.

My 6 mo. old puppy got Demodectic Mange
and she was on Comfortis. We started her on Promaris (3 apps) and it did NOT get better - only worse. Now she is 4 weeks into Ivermectin. It is working very well. I've never done the dips, I did buy some special shampoo, but this is a very frustrating problem. I would not do nothing - seems like it will get worse. My questions is ... how long is it safe to be on Ivermectin?

What Supplement do you use?
I just started Sally on NuVet Plus supplements. I have not had her scraped again, but will this next week when she goes in to be spayed.
