Question about switching food to TOTW

This week I have gradually switched Sally from My Perfect Pet (chicken) food to TOTW Pacific Stream. I realize her body is adjusting to the new food. I was just wondering if her poops would eventually firm up once she has switched over completely and is used to the new food. She does not have diarrhea, but they definitely aren't firm like before. Also, sometimes they might stick to her bottom and I'm noticing her bottom area looks a little red and irritated. I'm switching her because she was very underweight (barely 30 lbs @ 1 yr), has bad tear stains and is very congested and gunky (worse in the mornings). Anyways, wanted to see how she would do without chicken, and seems like everyone here speaks highly of TOTW!

I feed my dogs TOTW

Hi, I feed my bullies Taste of the Wild Pacific formula.. and they do great.  My female's weight was one of the reasons I did it, because she's always been on the small side.  She's done wonderfully on the new food, her coat is beautiful, and she put on 6 pounds.  She now weighs 48.  She will always be a smaller bully, but the vet says she's perfect for her frame.  The poops should firm up in a few days, you might consider giving a spoon or two of pumpkin if their bottoms still seem irritated in that time frame.  Make sure it's pure pumpkin, though, not the kind with pie spices in it.  I hope you see changes soon!

Thanks for your help!

Always good to hear words of encouragement!

How many cups per day do you feed?

I'm feeding her about 3 cups a day, between the old and new food. This may be a lot, but she needs to gain weight. Once she reaches a good weight, is 2 cups a day the right amount to feed?

You may also want to consider

Using probiotics.  I have had Q on TOTW Pacific Stream for years.  I also add a scoop of Total Biotics (by Ultra Pet) to each meal.  He eats 2 cups twice a day, and I add cut up raw fish to his PM feeding.  But, Q weighs 78 lbs (he's like a bulldog on steroids...lol).

If you're feeding what you think may be a large amount for your dog (BTW - I never go by what the bag says - I look at the dog), you may want to feed smaller meals more frequently.  That can sometimes be easier on the digestive tract.  You can adjust amounts up or down every few weeks; depending on how your dog looks.

Oh, and you could frame Q's poops! :0)

I agree with all of the above....plus......

My Olde English bulldog gets 3/4 cup in AM and PM

My Cain, bulldog, gets 1/2 cup in the AM and PM.....because he has bad hips and knees and gained weight on this food.  It works sooo well for him, except, he is a tad bit lasy (imagine that...) and I have to keep him light because of his issues.

I also throw a spoonful of low fat plain yogurt in their bowls which they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!  Helps with digestion.

Believe it or not, a Wellness Pet Food Rep told my friend that when you switch them, you can use the yogurt to calm the upset tummy that comes along with a switch.  I kept it up cause I see how much they love it.  It is like listening to them eat ice cream!!!  lol  Slurp,. Slurp,. Slurp.....
