Question about ACE for non bully

Will ACE work to sedate a small barky dog? I have heard the active dogs don't react as much to it. Any help?

From what I understand

its dangerous for the brachycephalic breeds (smoosh face, bulldog/pug/Peke etc., ) other then that it should be fine.

Ok. I am trying to catch a dog:-(

My deceased neighbor lady had many dogs, all but one were taken by a rescue. One little Rat Terrier girl slipped her enclosure and is so wild no one has been able to get near her for close to 3 weeks. We really want the little thing caught since we live in the country and a little dog alone out there doesn't stand a chance. She at least has some protection around my horses, coyotes don't come near the big guys. I finally picked up some ACE from my vet as a last resort, but I have heard it doesn't do much for hyper breeds....so I can only hope it will knock her out and then I can go pick her up, crate her, and get her to a foster place. I got the ACE in her a while ago by sneaking up to the yard and leaving a bowl of wet food down with the pill in it. She gobbled it right up! Now I am waiting for it to work....or hopefully work.

Amy

what about just using a have a heart trap?  Is she small enough to fit in one?  Or is she too skittish to go in something enclosed for food?  I hope you can get her poor thing must be so scared.

No, she won't go in a haveaheart

We tried that and she wouldn't go in. Could be because something else kept getting in it!

Let me tell you about ACE and Floyd....

it worked well for his grooming sessions (he was, and this is hard to say cause he was my boy, a total BRAT when it came to grooming) but then one day.....he got home and wanted to kill me.  I made the mistake of putting him on my bed at bedtime and he snarled and showed his teeth and kept coming towards me.....I honestly think that he would have gone nuts on me.....I made Dan take him off the bed but not even that worked because if I walked past his bed that night he would try to go after me.

The next morning he was fine.  Took him to the vet and she told me that ACE causes hallucinations in dogs and to stop using it.

Never, ever would I use that again.  It totally scared the crap out of me..............

wow!

If that happened to me I wouldn't want to use it again either.  Gosh!

What is it with you? LOL

I don't have any experience with ACE, sure hope it works. The poor little girl must be terrified.

Keep us updated, please

Well now, my friend, here's the deal.....

Three weeks ago, after my neighbor passed away and the rescue had come for most of the other dogs, little Dot, as she is called, slipped out of her kennel when Darla's sister opened the cage door. They couldn't catch her at all, she was so frightened by all the things that had gone on that week. They were all outside dogs, they were never handled that much by Darla, who worked hours and hours a day. Dot was never touched by anyone but Darla when she was handled and is completely wild for the most part. So, now that Dot is out, she needs to be caught. Here is where I come in.

The relatives of Darla set out a Have a Heart for Dot. It was next to the kennel she and her sister, Diamond", had lived in. Diamond was still there at the time, she has since gone to rescue. Well, Dot went right on in the live trap that night. Ok, no problem. The next morning I went over to feed Diamond and there was Dot, all cowering and scared in the trap. She came right to me and licked my fingers and cried up to me, and she was pushing up against my hand in the cage and totally convinced me that she would be well worth removing from the trap. Well meaning me, keep that in mind, thought I would take her from the trap and place her with Diamond in the kennel, then the rescue could take them both. So I slowly, and with Dot licking my hand the whole time, slowly reached in to unlatch the clasp and CHOMP!!!!! Two times in the fleshy part of my palm and on the top of my hand as hard as she could get me, then off she went out to the trap and hasn't been caught since. So, out of guilt and embarrassment, I swore I would get that stupid, er, frightened little dog and get her to a rescue. So far, nada. So I am down to trying to drug the danged thing and even that isn't working. I may just give it up, though I hate that she is over there alone.

You asked.

And stop shaking your head and laughing. I see you.

Ok, I know it sounds funny, and to me it is in a way, but holy moly, talk about a guilt trip every time that dog starts barking in the middle of the night and I KNOW she is over there alone and I am the reason! Well, not entirely, she would have done that to any person besides Darla who reached in to open that thing. So I feel guilty, but after all the sweet talk, food, cooing to her, walking in a crouch and half backwards so as not to spook her, offering her hot dogs and all sorts of nummies, am resorting to drugs. And it ain't working, so I don't know what else to try!

Oh, you have no idea.

I'm changing my name and my phone number, hoping that you won't be able to find me again.

I do know that when a dog or cat does not want to be caught, they don't get caught. Too bad the meds aren't working, is she acting any different at all? Can someone open the house, maybe she will go inside, easier to catch.

Sad for her, even if she is caught, who is going to be able to take or care for her. Not many people have the patience nor the facilities to house her during her rehab.

I know. I don't know how she will ever adjust to another place.

Not after this long of being unhandled. She is 5 years old.

The sister and brother in law only come out on the weekend. Maybe this weekend I will ask them to leave the door ajar when they leave, then I will watch and if Dot goes in I'll close it. Then they can deal with catching her in the house.

No, the ACE did nothing. It doesn't work on my hot horses either, it won't calm them down at all. I had asked my vet for something that would KNOCK HER DOWN. ACE isn't gonna do that, but what do I know about that stuff. I finally called teh vet clinic and they said, "Oh, gosh no, it won't put her to sleep. It will only calm her down". Right. Not what I asked them to do for me.

Oh, and as far as finding you. I will just look for the little foo foo dogs swirling around in a back yard somewhere in the winter wind:-) You won't be hard to find:-)

Ace

I gave my staffordshire ACE yesterday to calm him before going to the vet and he had a horrible reaction to it. He just snapped. He attacked my bully and when I pulled him off he bit me! I had to get to stitches in my leg. He's never been aggressive before so I know it was the ACE and I know that it's not a typical reaction but just putting it out there that some dogs may have an adverse reaction I'd just be careful.

I'm so sorry about what happened!! What a scary thing...

I feel badly for you that you were hurt. ACE can do funny things to them I guess. This little dog next door isn't responding at all to it.
