Puppy or Large Breed Puppy food?

I have done my research and have came to the conclussion that I want to feed my future puppy a grain free diet. I have listened to several opinions on why this is or is not a good idea. I have found more information on why this is the best diet for dogs than I have for the opposite. I also have compared all the information and found that it is not the protein but the calcium and Prophrus(not spelled correctly) levels that are dangerous along with the high level of ash.

What I am now puzzled with is if I should feed my bulldog pup the Large breed food or the puppy food. I am planning on feeding him Orijen so if you have experience with this particular brand that would be great. Some say that the bulldog is considered a large breed because it is over 50lbs but the standard says that they should be of medium build. Could someone please help me with this?

Please no opinions but facts. My little guy depends on facts not opinions of individuals who have no clue what they are talking about. Im not trying to be rude just trying to the best information as possible. If you can provide me with the source that way I could read for myself that would be great.

For those that have helped me in the past I say thank you and I truly do appreciate it.

if you going to go raw speak

if you going to go raw speak to deb and mackenzie and esther....she knows bullies!

Thanks

I would love to go raw and agree with everything about the raw diet. With my demanding work schedule I do not have time to feed the raw diet. I am trying to choose the next best thing when it comes to grain free. I am looking for something that is very close to the benefits of raw so that I can provide him the best source of food.

Thanks alot for the help.

raw is not time consuming

There are several raw feeders here that have lots of information.  There is no one set method to feeding raw, and between those of us that do feed it there aren't 2 that do it exactly the same.

What has made you feel that raw is too time consuming?

Thanks ... but I'm really a newbie

when it comes to raw feeding.  I think I know bullies well, bull raw not so much.   I'm lucky with my dogs because I just don't have those food issues and allergy issues that others have.  So for me it is real easy.  My dogs can pretty much eat anything.  Still learning and likely always will be.

Cathy has done a ton of research and is my go to gal :)

A few sources

I can't answer your question, but I will recommend that you contact Courtney at Carolina Pet Pantry.  It may take her a few days to get back to you (she's got the flu right now and she has 10 5-week old bulldog puppies at home with her) but she's a very big believer in feeding holistic grain free diets to dogs.  Her site has several different brands that are all excellent options.  She will be able to guide you towards a food that's got a good protein and fat content for puppies as well as help you work to eliminate possible allergens from the diet.

All of the proceeds from her "store" (it's just an online store, she doesn't actually have a retail space) go towards bulldog rescue.  :)

So, I don't have "facts" for you, but she definitely will.  Good luck!

Orijen

is a good food.   Bulldogs don't need puppy food, so just go with their adult version and if you decide on puppy food it would be large Breed.  The kibble is typically larger in the large breed puppy food.

But the bottom line is....you use what works best for your dog.  While Orjen might be great for some dogs it might not work with others.  There is no one stop shop here, alot of the food issue is finding what works best for your dog.  If you ask a food question you will get hundreds of different answers.  Everyone will tell you what has worked for them for their dog.  For instance many feed TOTW and have great success with it.  I did not with one of my dogs, she got a horrible staph infection from that food (likely she can't handle eating Salmon) and I limit Salmon oil with her and feed Sardines weekly.

I feed raw now and it is as time consuming as you want to make it...but all raw feeders will tell you to keep it simple and varied.

I fed prepackaged raw for a couple of years and if I could afford to feed 3 dogs on it I would.  It is very easy. You take a pattie out of the freezer, allow to thaw (mostly) and feed.  Nothing time consuming about that.  I did add joint supplements as well as additional Omega 3 & 6. (ie Salmon Oil, or a similar high in Omegas oil).

When I fed kibble I most recently fed "Now"  a grain free made by PetCurean.  My dogs did well on this kibble.  I don't have allergy issues with my dogs.  If you do then food issues can become more complicated if the dog has food allergies.

I've had bulldogs for 16 yrs, I've shown for about 8 yrs.  I've had breeder judges rave about my bitches coat at a specialty show saying it was the best coat they had felt all day...80 plus entries and that was 10 wks post puppies.

Good Luck!  Be Flexible!  If you puppy ends up having allergies the you will likely be trying many different brands of dog food to find what works best.  Let's hope you have done as much homework on who you are purchasing the puppy fromas you are doing on what you will be feeding.  Homework is a good thing!
