puppy food?

hey guys quick question... the vet recommened using a premium puppy food (purina pro plan or hills science diet) until 8-9 months, but my breeder told me I should stick with the regular food i have been using because puppy food has to much protein and could make them grow faster which could be hard on their hips... anyone else have some insight? thanks!

No Puppy Food

Vets are rarely trained as nutritionists and most have no experience with raising puppies, especially bullodg puppies.

They do not need puppy food, it is too rich for them.  A good quality life stages or adult food is fine.  I switched all my puppies around 4 month.

FYI - Science Diet is a horrible food.  Check the ingredients.  Vets get $$$ for selling Science Diet, that is why they recommend it.

haha i figured that! i

haha i figured that! i obviously believed the breeder more so just because she has delt with it more. what else should i not listen to the vet about haha!thanks for the response by the way

our first vet

our first vet said ALL bulldogs have hip problems, ALL bulldogs need surgery at least 3-4 times in a 8 year life span, and ALL bulldogs have breathing problems.....we never even let him touch Kippah

Well Not true! Our BCA president just had

3 of his dogs xrayed normal - good hips by OFA.  I just had some xrays done on Kohl and one just happened to me his hips and my vet said his hips looked very good.

It is important IMO that people educate themselves about the breed and look for breeders that are doing health testing and certs before deciding on a breeder to buy a puppy from.  Of course it does not guarantee that you won't have a possible problem, but it is better then going to a breeder that doesn't give a crap about health.

Well put. Thats why I looked

Well put. Thats why I looked around for a while. I am very happy with my breeder and my two beautiful bullies.

yes, my point exactly

some vets have such a poor opinion of EB's, and those would surley be vets that I would stay away from.  Their first suggestion would be surgery that could easily be avoided.  Im sure these opinions came from years of seeing bullies from BYBs, but generalizations are never good!

my exp (little as it may be)

I listened to Deb when I first got here and took Kippah off puppy food, and watched the protien level.  She is growing nicely, will be a year next month and approaching 40 pounds.....I always thougth she was small but I got ahold of some breed standard sizing information and she is spot on.....within the next year she might get another few pounds.  Not being on Puppy food was the right choice for her!

Thanks for the input. I'm

Thanks for the input. I'm going to stay with the food I have been using and the one the breeder uses. It says on the package all ages anyways so that works for me

Another thing to not listen to...

They want to give the rabies shot at 16 weeks, just the time when they are under stress from teething, other shots and sometimes rehoming.  Their immune systems can't handle all the vaccines and some dogs wind up with demodex (mange) which is treatable but a pain.  We always wait until 7 or 8 months to do the rabies shot.

well i guess it would be

well i guess it would be around then to get their rabies because i think they said they could do it on their last vaccination day which wold be between 17-18 weeks depending when i get them in... would that still be too soon?

Wait until after 6 months

I never have rabies before 6 months and try to do it closer to a year.

The vet will give you its the law speech and such but it's your dog and decision.

why is it better to do it at

why is it better to do it at a year? wouldnt teething be over?

Deb and MacKenzie and Ester's picture

It's not really the teething

it's a combination of all those shots, a new home, growing, teething that can put a stress on and compromise the immune system.  I just prefer to wait as long as I can.    In our state it has just now become law so I wasn't so concerned.  I don't take my dogs to dog parks.  We did travel alot in Canada so I had to have rabies shots for that, but unless I had too I just waited.  I also would get them before I started showing a puppy, but the youngest you can show is 6 months.

Either way I always tried to wait until after 6 months.

thank you so much! great

thank you so much! great information!

Vaccinations....

It's never a good idea to give the rabies at the same time as other vaccines.
