I'm very happy to report that Beasley has made a tremendous success after his TTA surgery! We still have to use his walk about per our surgeon because his right leg will also need surgery as well. Beas had his stitches removed some time ago. A week and a half later, he had licked his wound and created an infection. So, after meds from our surgeon, he was back on the cone and not a happy camper. His wound healed well with the help of the meds and his cone, which he cannot stand! They reccomended that we leave it on at night only and while we are gone so his wound can completely heal. He is also still quarantined to a small area of the living room and has to be on a leash going to and from outside so he does not run around. His post opt appt will be the 2nd week of September where an x-ray will be taken to ensure the implant is still in place and everything looks good.
So, here lies the problem...I don't know if he is just mad and frustrated with having to be cooped up and still use the cone, but he has had peed three times in the living room in a matter of four days!! Beas has not done this since he was a puppy. He is now 3 yrs old. Of course being the worried Mother that I am, I'm thinking...is he sick or just being defiant because he is upset? He does not do this in his crate, just recently and when we are usually about to leave. I feel like now, he wound should be good to go, so tonight we'll remove his cone. But, I'm not sure if that will pacify him? Thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Poor guy...
I don't believe that dogs do things for spite. Is it possible he has a uti or is he on any meds that cause excessive peeing such as prednisone? Our Oscar had entropian surgery and instead of a cone, which would have made him frantic, the vet wrapped his front paws in ace bandages so he couldn't scratch his eyes. He became very depressed and lethargic. The minute the wraps came off, he was back to his old self. It's good he's about done with the cone.
I know, the poor guy has been
I know, the poor guy has been completely out of his usual routine. I thought it may be a uti or something to that nature, but he doesn't have any accidents while he is in his crate or during the night. It's been right before he knows we are about to leave and put that dreadful cone on. He has been off of meds for about 2 weeks now. I think he is just frustrated about being cooped up and not being about to go where he wants. So, last night, we moved his bed back into our room and without his cone! He did great. Before, we were taking turns sleeping in the living room where he was b/c he has a tendancy to hear and noise and immediately jump up and run. I think we've just been trying to be so careful and make sure he heals 100%, especially after we had the hiccup of his wound becoming infected from him licking. But, yesterday, he had full reign of the house and we just tried to keep him calm and not get excited to where he wants to run and get his toys. He seemed much happier this morning and no accidents!! I'm going to hide that cone just so he knows for sure that it's gone. Thanks so much for the advice and for listening to me vent! This entire process has been a difficult one for us and Beas, all new territory on what to do and what not to do.
