possible seizure

HI, its been awhile since I posted but wanted to get some of your opinions.....

Today, Spike had an episode lasting about 20 seconds where he was acting like a bug was in his mouth or he tasted something really bad. He had excessive salivation and was shaking his head but then got a little wobbley while he ran around my kitchen. I wiped his face with a cool towel. He did not lose consciousness and was completely normal within less than one minute. I thought it was a little strange & just decided to watch him. (2pm today)

Around 815-830 we were laying on the sofa and he stood up and open his mouth really wide and started shaking his head and salivating again. He was wobbley as he went down the dog stairs and I again wiped his face and talked calm to him. The 2nd time he seemed more "out of it" but again never lost consciousness. After the episode (maybe 45 seconds) he was his normal self again.

We rushed him to the Er vet. They did a neuro check(normal) and drew labs (sendouts) and then sent us home saying to come back if they got worse.

He is not on any meds except heartgaurd. No new foods or treats. He just turned 8 and has been pretty healthy except for a recent ekgabnormality (skipped heartbeats-VPC's)

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions. We are going to call out regular vet in the am.

Thanks in advance,

Ashley

Head Shakes

did he have head shakes? Did you notice anything different with his eyes?  I would say it was probably a mild seizure. If it happens again did the vet give you any suggestions on what to do. If he is having head shakes try to get him to eat something with sugar.

MacKenzie is 7 and for the first time in his life he has had 2 episodes of head shaking (ie low blood sugar) The first time I gave him apple sauce, it was all I had. He's also had 2 episodes of what I would consider mild seizures. Disorientation, lack of motor function, wobbley, a little out of it and he lost his bladder once on the couch.

Norbert also had seizure type of episodes when he got older, around 9. Vet thought it could be a brain tumor but I don't think so. They put him on seizure meds for a time then weined him off them. He only had 2 episodes in a couple of years.

thanks, he was shaking his

thanks, he was shaking his head alot both times but had the salivation and was wobbley. They said that if they stopped on their on so quickly just to stay clam & keep him calm and make note of them. Would he have the other symptoms for low BS.

Head shakes

is the most common symptom for low bloods sugar. Give him honey or something with sugar. Hopefully someone who has more experience with head shakes will post. I would think wobbley would go right along with the head shakes but I don't remember either of mine salivating. Either way I would still treat it as low blood sugar.

Does he eat twice a day? When did he have these episodes?

Yes, he eats twice a day. He

Yes, he eats twice a day. He had breakfast around 10 and dinner around 530-6. THe first episode was around 1 or 2 pm and the second was around 8 pm. They did a  CBC, chem panel and thyroid on him so the chem panel will tell me his BS (if it didn't spike with stress???) He also get treats throughout the day.

I am upset to type that at 130 this morning he had another episode. He has been fine since. He ate breakfast about 730 and my husband is going to stay home with him today. I am a nervous wreck today. The longer he goes without another one the better I'll feel.

Cathy,I watched the video and

Cathy,

I watched the video and that is exactly what his head looked like but he had excessive salivation and was wobbley. What do you do for Zimmer? I am petrified to leave him alone now. I didn't sleep last night, I just watched him.

I give him a piece of food...

to divert his attention. Sometimes his flews flap and he does drool, but he's never been wobbley at all.  I'm going to email you lots of info & my phone number so we can talk.

Thanks Cathy

I knew there would be someone that could share more info.  MacKenzie is my only experience with this type of head shaking and it's only happened twice. I just don't have much experience with it.

Spanky would have head tremors....(pic)

Our dog Spanky would have head tremors. I noticed when I changed his food and brought his weigh down from show weight he did MUCH better. I agree with everyone it seems to be blood sugar but I had a bitch that only did it when she was pregnant. It helped her to increase her calcium intake, just giving her calcium tabs. But with Spanky all I had to do was offer him a piece of sliced bread and he would quit. So I also agree with them about distracting them, once I did that all I had to do was crinkle the bag with the bread and he would quit.

Beloved Spanky
