possible cherry eye , is it ok to wait until monday for the vet?

Dear all,

My poor 5 yr old kibby girl had an irritated eye all day yesterday.. she just kept winking at me all day.. i looked and didnt see any foreign objects or an eyelash, so i just put a few dry eye- eye drops in there and did a couple of cool compresses... this morning she woke up and could barely open her eye, it was red and swollen, no gooey or unusual discharge, just alot of tears, so much its making her skin red in her fold (she is a white bully).  she has a little grey goo in the inner corner and I did notice that her other eye was starting to look reddish and droopy looking as well, but not irritated and winking...

i figured it may be allergies, so i gave her a claritin. she is still eating, and wants to play, but i think the sunlight was irriating her ,so she chose to skip a couple of walks until evening. unfortunately, the vet was booked all day, and my actual bulldog vet was out of the office until monday. the emergency vet in my area sucks, i have been there before and its just a bunch of med students trying to get their hours in.  She looks a little better this evening... no more redness, still swollen on one eye-can only open like 25%, and still droopy on the other eye... then i noticed that her corner meat (3rd lid?) does look a little swollen, but not as severe or red as I have seen on the archive pictures of cherry eye.

so anyways, i was thinking to just give another claritin tmrw and then bring to vet on mon... unless anyone here thinks this is more serious? i know of another emergency vet about an hour away.. should i go there? i am kinda scared to go to a vet that may not have experience with bullys.

but... i have never had experience with cherry eye before so i don't want kibby to go blind or something because i decided to wait until monday.

we haven't used any new products in the house, and she is still eating same food.. i am thinking she maybe ate something off the floor while i wasnt looking, because she did have gas all day on the day she was winking at me, and that is unusual.... or it could be because we just mowed the front and back lawn after about a month or 2 of neglect, so there was alot of dust, dirt, grass all flying in the air while dogs were playing outside for a couple of hours. any thoughts ?? thanks for any help or suggestions.. as always, it is greatly appreciated. thanks :)

i'll try to post some pics if i can figure it out...

Eye...

Put in antibiotic eye ointment (without steroids) and/or artificial tears until you get to the vet tomorrow.  Perhaps and hopefully the irritation will be gone by then and you can cancel the appointment.  I doubt if food caused the problem and think it's more likely from a scratch or allergy.  If her eyes were itchy and she rubbed them, it could cause the cherry to pop out though I think it's probably unusual for a cherry eye to appear for the first time in a 5 yr. old.  But if it is, try to gently massage it back into place.  Cherry eye is not an emergency.   I think there are instructions on the home page here.   Good luck!

I think vet visit

IMHO it is not cherry eye due to age. I would not waste time having a vet see your bully. Eye issues are something that need prompt attention as blindness is always a risk if the unknown condition goes untreated.

she seems a little better today...

this morning was kinda scary because her eye was kinda stuck together and it seemed as though the other eye got worse, so kibby was kind blind for a bit... then i gave her another hour to sleep and another claritin ... and by afternoon - she was much better. i don't think its cherry eye anymore because that third lid swelling went away. her eyes are still red, not as droopy or swollen anymore... i was about to bring her to the emergency room today, but i figure i would try the claritin and an extra nap to see if it would work, and it did make a difference. off to the vet tmrw, i just want to be sure it is just allergies and hopefully its nothing worse...

bullys are so stressful sometimes, they just seem so sad when they know they are sick... and its hard not to be a paranoid mommy! :)

eye...

Didn't realize it was both eyes.  Perhaps it's conjunctivitis.....easy fix with antibiotic eye ointment from the vet.  Ask for an extra tube to keep on hand.

Best wishes.

kibby is OK ! vet says it was allergies!

kibby is fine.. vet says most likely she was stung by a bug or ate a bug and got stung... thus the quickness in both of her eyes swelling up!! another couple of days of claritin, some more neo-poly-bac and she will be fine! Vet says that i better keep some benedryl around for emergency fast reacting allergy cases like this! says claritin takes longer to kick in. thanks for everyones help!

its so funny.. i did see her catch a bug flying around her last week! so strange! kibby is like a crazy frog.. she just sits there and waits to eat bugs that fly near her head!

liquid benadryl.....

keep both  but use the liquid benadryl for a bad reaction. works faster....i would also discuss a epi pen....wilson has a hypolastic trechea and he has horrible  allergy reactions to spiders he throat closes right up

got it... thank you..where do i get an epi-pen?

so sorry, i have heard of them mentioned on here before but i am not sure exactly what it is... or when do you know to use epi-pen? , versus benedryl? is it like a syringe?

i have never had a dog with allergies before, and i don't have any myself... so all of this is totally new to me! i am kinda recognzing allergy symptons now (although they always look like life and death situations to me because i am super paranoid mom !) - red eyes, runny, or goopy eyes, congestion, itchiness, swelling.. right- anything else? ... thanks!
