Fatboy has had issues with phlegm for as long as we've had him. Lemon doesn't work and the vet only suggested to give benedryl (which never made sense to me and never worked). Tonight he started to cough up what looked like phlegm. It looked yellowish but when I wiped it up it was clear and foamy. And since this incident he's been trying to cough up more, but it sounds more like it's trying to come out of his nose and chest. It's like he is sneezing but it's not a sneeze. It's more like when you try to blow something out of your nose really hard (just not as long sounding).
I hope I'm making sense and someone can give some advise. I feel like the vet (an approved bully vet) didn't really look into the issue. And since I just got hired on with a new job, I can't take him to any vet until next Saturday.
Fatboy aka Stinky :)
How is he acting?
Is he himself or is he lethargic? Could some of it be reverse sneezing? That can sound pretty scary. I would imagine the vet suggested benedryl to dry up the mucous. I have found that Muscinex works well for getting rid of phlegm, you could probably find the doseage online. If he is acting sick I would take him in for some chest xrays to rule out pneumonia.
I have come to the conclusion that...
some bulldogs just have more phlelm than others. Like you, our Sally (Who will turn 2 next month) has been congested, has frothy foam and regurgitates her morning meal EVERYDAY since the day we got her @ 9 weeks old. She is still a very active bulldog, not lazy and sleeping all day. She snores all the time and I believe this contributes to alot of her congestion issues. No bulldog vet, breeder or expert has been able to tell me for sure why she is so congested. We have tried just about everything, even expensive allergy testing and allergy shots, but she still is the way she is. She has had palate surgery, but still is the same...regurges her food every morning (Not too bad in the evening as the congestion has slightly cleared up by then). Bottom line...I believe some are just more congested than others. Deanne

Trach
Have you had her trach xrayed?
Yes...we have
When she was around 12 weeks we had her xrayed because she literally fell over when coughing up phlem. We weren't sure if she had gotten hold of a toy and was choking (That was not the case). Our vet said that she does have a small trachea, but since then he has also done two different eye surgeries on her and hasn't been alarmed by the size of her trachea. I am not aware of anything that can be done for a small trachea; not really sure what I can do to prevent her from regurging her food either. Any suggestions?
