Phemobarbital for seizures
Submitted by Jan and the Bullies on July 30, 2011 - 11:25pmDuke started on Phemobarbital today and took his first pill around 11:00 am. He is suppose to take it 2 times a day.
I need to put him on a schedule that will work with me when I go back to work. Can I skip his pill tonight that he would take at 11:00
pm and give it to him at 5:00 in the morning or would this cause him to have another seizure? Any suggestions would be a great help

Don't skip doses
Phenobarb is one of those meds that you have to build up in the system to "therapeutic levels" before it can actually be effective in controlling seizures.
Check with your vet on dosing times. In people, twice daily phenobarb is usually given at 9am and 5 pm. It doesn't hurt to give it on a 12 hour time interval, but it can be safe to have the interval between doses vary a bit more (as opposed to antibiotcs which MUST be given at strict intervals).
