So I found a new vet for Daizy, we had an hour long meet & greet. She took one look at her and asked why I hadn't taken care of her Entropian. The previous vet said dont worry it is fine. (morons) So any ways Daizy needs surgery for both eyes, I would like to know what everybody's opinion is on laser surgery vs the knife? THis new Vet uses laser for surgeries. I have been quoted at $1,360.00, from what I see from others on this site, the quotes are much lower, so curious about that as well. I am in Brampton, ON Canada if that helps. The new Vet claims she has quite a bit of experience with these surgeries. Not sure if I should let the Vet do it or go to a specialist? Opinions guys?? Any Ontarians out there?
Thanks.
I think it's less expensive...
to use regular surgery. We had one boy who had entropian a few years ago and he did fine with the regular surgery. Most vets that have bulldog experience can handle it.
Hi Kathy,All her surgeries
Hi Kathy,
All her surgeries are done by laser, so I don't have an option if she is the one doing it. Are you in Ontario?
If you are unsure...
I would recommend you take your bully to the Ontario Veterinary Hospital at Guelph University. Our Chloe went there for cruciate surgery and they were amazing. It was no more expensive than at the regular local vet and we just felt that if anyone would know how to do it properly they would. We also live in Ontario and you are so close it would be quite easy for you to go there. I think you can contact them yourself or ask your vet to do so.
Thanks Carol, Not really trusting vets too much...
The first Vet who gave my Duke Phenobarb for his neuter surgery, also said Daizy's eyes were fine and to keep them lubricated. My new Vet says they need to be done. At this point I dont know if she even really needs it or not. Dont know what to believe. So frustating!! If I post a pic would you guys be able to tell?
I'm about as far from Ontario as you can get...
I live in Arizona. Glad to see someone has a vet recommendation for you though.
I personally have not ....
ever experienced any entropian problems with my dogs so am not a person to give you any advice in that department. Sorry. Hope you are able to connect with a vet service who will provide you with confidence and solid medical advice.
Post a picture
and I will tell you what I think.
Many bulldogs have entropian. The question is does it need surgical correction or not. I do not believe surgery is needed unless they are uncomfortable and there is risk in damaging the eye. If they have a mild case and no discomfort, then I would not do surgery.
Discomfort symptoms are blinking, squinting and excessive watering. This can also be symptoms of distichia. If the case is severe then the risk is an eye ulcer.
If surgery is opted for then laser is the only way to go.
Here's the pic
Hi Deb, Daizy does blink, squint, and have excessive watering. I assume she needs it, but always worrying. The joys of being a bully mommy. Sorry, it's so big, Im not to tech savvy...lol, thanks for your opinion :-)
I would get a second opinion from an Opthamologist
The surgery may even be cheaper using an Opthamologist.
We had Entropian- bottom lids..I have a ? for you...if u dont
mind me asking....Why are you getting surgery? Is it bothering her, rubbing eyes, a lot of tears, etc? Now, I have had some doubts about our Doc, but his approach is that if the eye is not bothering the dog, leave it be.
Silverback's Immaculate Interception, "James"
Our Mugszy had 4 surgeries...
from a very well respected doctor in Jacksonville, FL. None of them worked, it always came back. We decided to treat it with drops ever since (9 years).
Best wishes on the surgery, I hope it works the first time.
How old is she?
I was told that one of my boys might need entropian surgery when he was about a year old, but we regularly used eye ointment, and his head grew, which changed his eye lid, I guess. He's 3-1/2 now and didn't need the surgery after all. Good luck.
