My son's puppy Maverick will be a year old in a few weeks. Always been a good eater. The last few weeks he has seemed to lose his appetite. He will eat, but probably about 1/3 of normal in a day. Even when "treats" like cottage cheese or shredded cheese are added he just seems not interested. Prior to this if treats were added to his food he would devour it.
He appears to have lost a little weight but otherwise acts normal. He is pooping (though not as much as when he was eating more), drinking, peeing, playing, but just doesn't seem to care about his food.
He eats Natural Balance Potato & Bison and has always loved it. Tried a different variety and still no interest. I had him for a few days and if I added some chicken broth to his food he would eat about one cup per day but didn't seem enthused at all.
We are calling our vet tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or suggestions.

not eating
Could he have pain in his mouth? such as a broken tooth, cut gum, swollen glands in his throat, etc. that make it painful to eat? Sounds like he is only eating just enough to keep going.
Hope you find out what is up wtih him.
Could be a particle stuck in a gum,
A hair or sharp object perhaps? I agree though, possibly mouth or throat pain of some sort. Good thing he has a vet visit coming, he might need one.

Could Mavrick have swallowed something
like toy or something no one even realized he swalllowed. He may have a blockage. I would ask the vet about this also have him check for low Thyroid.

Good thought also.
Duh, I can't believe I didn't consider it. Thanks Jo Ann, good thought to look into this.
