Olliver and Sebastian...

went to see their bulldog vet yesterday and got a clean bill of health. My concern is this -

Dr. Bauer recommended nares surgery for both boys and said she could do the surgery the same time that she neuters them and that they could be neutered as early as 4-5 months old. I've read all the posts on here about when is the best time to neuter the boys and I'm not sure what to do. Some say 6 months is okay and others prefer to wait until they are a year.

With Oliver, it really isn't that big of an issue, only his right nare is narrow, but as you know Sebastian has severe pulmonic stenosis and both of his nares are very narrow. She says that by opening up Sebastian's nares it will help his breathing and put less strain on his heart.

Just would like some feedback from some more experienced bully mommy and daddy's.

As far as the neuter

I am in no hurry to neuter my boy.  He has no behavior issues with being intact.  We are continually training him and challenging his mind.  He loves to learn and is the best dog.  I am very happy I have waited and continued to wait, I am able to watch him grow and fill out his structure.  He is 14 months old and will continue to grow for months still.

thanks Katie...

but since they have to be put under for the nares surgery I just thought it would be a good idea to have them neutered at the same time. We all know bully's don't always handle anesthesia very well. Like I said, Oliver can wait on his surgery till he (or I) am ready, but Sebastian should really have it done ASAP to help prolong his life.

Surgery

I would go for the nares surgery, as it will make a big difference for his breathing.

Neutering isn't necessary for his quality of life - it can cause all kind of problems (google on it - it does have negative side-effects).

If you go to a Bulldogvet, who knows all about his hearth problems, they will do this fairly small job with extra care. It is a risc, but you have to weight the pro's against the riscs. It is a difficult decision - so I wish you load of wisdom!

thanks

I do go to a bulldog vet and she is well aware of his heart problems, she just figured that if she was putting him under for the nares she may as well put him under for his neutering too. I want to do what's best for Sebastian and I know that neutering is not necessary for his health.

Neutering

If you are going to take a chance and put this puppy under for a nare surgery than I would have him neutered at the same time.  You have to keep inmind that 2 intact males Do NOT always get along and with one that is healthy and one that may be sickly you could possibly have problems down the road.  The bigger boy could likely pick on the little guy.  It is normal animal behavior. I would be very hesitant to want to chance a 2nd surgery for this puppy with his heart condition.

IMO growth has everything to do with genetics, the lines and a healthy start. Sebastian is a special puppy and keeping his testicals may play no part in his maturity.  He is more then likely always going to be a smaller boy. There is nothing wrong with that.

Is the vet actually doing a roto-rooter job on the nares as compared to just tacking the nostril back?  I would want to make sure she is actually opening up the whole passage.

Best of luck!

im not a expert

kim, but i agree if your gonna put him under get it all done. now i dont know about being smaller. henry is definitly smaller than bubba and he is 2 weeks older but henry is definitly the more dominant one. bubba's laid back. i find myself having to seperate henry because he is too aggressive. i could see the difference in their personalities right away and as the days past more and more. Is oliver more aggressive than sabastian? or visa versa?

aggressive wise, they are both the same, but Oliver has been so laid back and easy going since I brought him home, it's hard to tell. My breeder kept telling me I didn't really want him because he was so naughty at her house, but since he's been home, I have yet to see a naughty side. Sebastian is definitley smaller, but they are the same age. Oliver lets him get away with a lot of stuff that I wouldn't if I were a puppy.

Deb...

I don't know details yet, she just mentioned it when I took him in for his 12 week shots. She suggested that when he's 4-5 months old to do it then. Both boys go back in 4 weeks for their next series of shots and we'll discuss it then. I will be sure to ask her about roto-rootering, thanks for the advice. That's why I come here, I don't know that much about raising bully's but I'm definitely learning more every day and I only want to do what's best for them. Oliver, I will definitely wait until he's between 1-2 years old to neuter him, since he's perfectly healthy. Oliver also has a nostril that needs to be opened up, but his is not as bad as Sebastian's. Thank you for all the good advice.

As for the bigger boy picking on the little boy, it's actually the other way around. Sebastian is constantly picking on Oliver and Oliver lets him. I have to watch him to make sure that Sebastian doesn't get too tired out, but he's actually pretty good about slowing down himself.
