We have been feeding our puppy raw for a week now and everything is going good with him eating. He has been eating chicken wings so far and hes doing great eating them up. One question is does everyone stick to the 10% of food as a puppy? He will be 8 weeks on tues and he weighs around 7.5lbs now according to my scale. My paper from the breeder had him weighing 7lbs almost a week and a half ago, should he have gained more than that so far or is that ok. Hes doing great and has great energy when he not sleeping lol. Thanks.
I do not have any puppy experience
with raw feeding, but from what I can find, you should feed a puppy 2-3% of the ideal adult weight. I do not understand what your 10% question is referring to? I also read in one that it is OK to let a puppy eat as much as it wants.
I can not find any information that suggests to alter the ratios either. 80% muscle 10% bone 10% secreting organs
I hope a breeder will speak up about the weight gain, because I have no answer to that.
I DO know that chicken wings are not nearly enough meat and way way too much bone, but good to use as a starting point. Since your pup did so well I think it's safe to start adding more proteins, especially some red meat for a growing puppy.
That website I linked in a post below has the best most easily understood articles on protein and nutrition in general.
I would absolutely start any new puppy I ever happen to get in the future immediately on a raw diet, I am very excited to have you relate your puppy experience with it!

Thanks
From what I have read you feed a puppy 10% of its current body weight until it reaches 3% of its adult weight, meaning if your puppy weighs 10lbs you feed 1lb a day and so on until it reaches 3% of its adult weight. If the dog is supposed to weigh 60lbs full grown once the puppy has reached 3% of that or 18lbs then you start feeding the 2-3%. Yeah I wanted to stick with chicken wings in the beginning cause they have a decent amout of bone to meat to make the transition easier on his tummy.
Wish I could help,
Kofi was three when she started on raw.
Hope someone chimes in with the info you need.
I don't really know all too
I don't really know all too much about raw-diet, nor am I a breeder or an expert. (and I could be wrong but this is based on my experience) My dogs don't eat raw, however they are still puppies. I would think weight gain in a growing puppy should be somewhat the same regardless of what kind of food you're giving him/her. If you're puppy gained 5 lbs in a week and a half I would say that is pretty good. That means he gain 1lbs in 2.5 days. Especially since you just changed his whole diet, brought him into a new enviroment, and only started him on the raw diet. As a puppy, he should be feed a least 3 times a day. If he seems like he is still hungry its ok to give him a little more. Every puppy is different...some need to eat more and some eat less. I would just watch you puppies behavior. If he still seems like he is hungry...feed him a little more and just watch to make sure he doesn't get too fat. One of my breeders told me never to deprive food to a growing puppy and to feed them till their satisfied.
All three of my puppies eat differently. Bronx has a fast metabolism and required more than average amount of food to give per what the bag said when he was a puppy puppy. I was following what the bag said to give him based on his age and he was loosing weight rather than gaining... So I started giving him more. He is a year and a half and 70lbs! By 6mths he was 50lbs...so you can see he grew really fast. Even today- he is just a trimed, athletic looking bulldog. I feel at times that he needs to put on some more fat but genetically he just isn't built that way.
Cali is like a little piggy. If you gave her the whole 30lb bag she would eat herself to death. I oberserved her for two weeks and adjust her food according to her weight gain. She is more of a standard to the breed...short legs, big belly. If she was looking way to fat I would cut down the amount I gave her. Her parents were about 40-45lbs so she is a lot smaller than Bronx. Her weight gain was less drastic. She is 8mths now and about just about 40lbs and solid! When we got Cali the breeder said feed her till she is satisfied but for Cali that didn't work...because she NEVER STOPPED eating!!! But for my other two dogs Bronx and Jersey- it did.
Hope this helps you a little..best of luck!

Hey Adam, I found this
Hey Adam, I found this article and thought it might be useful. Somethings I said previously doesn't really apply when your feeding a raw diet because with raw there is more of a balance among foods. All of which I just learned.

Cathy had posted an article from it on an eariler post but this one is for puppies and raw diet.
Looks pretty interesting! Hope it helps
