new puppy with roundworm(s)

Our new 7 week old puppy vomited today and there was a farely long roundworm in it. Have not seen any in her stool yet. Breeder indicated that she has had several treatments but is due for her 8 week treatment. What is the reality that the pup has actually had treatments as she had such a long worm in her? She also has the bloated looking belly. What else should we be looking for now? Thank you.... Tad

Re:

Puppies usually receive 3-4 de-worming treatments before they go to their new homes.

I worm my pups starting at 2 weeks of age and again every 10-14 days, then have the pups stool checked at their 8 week Vet visit when they go in for exams and 1st shots. With the bloated belly appearance you describe and the pup bringing up a worm, get the pup wormed again, then re-check his stool for any worm eggs in about 10 days and re-worm again if necessary. You don't want the pup carrying a worm load thru this vital time of growth for him, it can negatively impact his future health.

The good news is that worms are relatively easy and cheap to treat. Be sure to promptly pick up his poop piles so he, or another dog, doesn't become re-infected with worms.

I can't say if she has had any worming done....

But it would be my assumption she hasn't. It's time for a fecal float by your vet to see what exactly is in there, then he/she can give you what the pup needs to get rid of them:-)

Unlikely

IMO. I personally don't think any breeder who sends a puppy to their new home prior to 8 weeks I would consider reputable. Of course with certain exceptions, but not to a pet home/new buyer.  Were you provided the shot and worm record and contract along with the AKC registration papers at the time you purchased the puppy? That should give you the dates and what was used for worming as well as what shots were given.

This puppy sounds full of worms and a bloated appearance is a sign of worms. Poor little thing. It is also not getting the nutritional value it needs for growth with it being full of worms. If it's the puppy in your picture it looks very thin and runtish. I would get it to the vet asap for a worming, health check and then lots of grub.

Best of luck!  With some good health care and lots of food you will have a different puppy in 4 weeks.

Agree...unlikely

If the pup's mother was on heartworm medication the pups would most likely NOT get any type of worms.

I don't worm my pups unless it's necessary.  I take a fecal sample to my vet for analysis.  If it's clean they don't get wormed because there's no need.

Good luck!

Agree

We wormed Ester's puppies at 6 wks and 8 weeks, never saw worms and Kohl was fecal tested at 16 weeks and it was negative. Infact in the 15 years that I have had bulldogs I've never had a positive test and I've never wormed any of my dogs.
