New Puppy, First Dog, Help with food!

We finally got a dog and I have never had one in my life so everything is new.  Love our little bully to death so I want to make sure I do everything right.  He is almost 12 weeks old and 14 pounds of love.  Had him for a little over a month now. The breeder had him on Science Diet food so we stuck with that.  People at PetSmart told me to put him on the large dog puppy food, we kept with Science Diet.  I think he is fine with that but I have read a lot of good reviews on the Costco dog food.  I need to know how important is it to keep him on "puppy" food and is it important to have "large breed" food?  I did read that when switching food we should introduce it a little at a time.  Thought I would get some feedback from some bulldog owners rather than PetSmart people!  Thanks in advance for helping out this newbie

Congrats !

I had a lab puppy years ago (ahhhh those days! LOVED them)  anyway, we kept her on a HIGH QUALITY Puppy Food, due to the ratio's for a fast growing puppy.

There is a reason for puppy food, I'm not sure about the 'large breed' significance though.

I know someone will  speak up real fast here.... that is along as ya send pictures of the baby :) we LOVE pictures :) :)

You will have some great information coming to you..

And I dont have all the specifics--other people will post with more exact details.  But I know what works for us, (Kippah is almost 7 months old) we were told to get off the puppy food, it is too much protien.  I have her on Lamb and brown rice food, NO wheat NO corn.  and the protien goal is about 23% to aim for. You will find that puppy has alot more protien.  The reason they told you large breed is that it is a little better on the growth of the joints.  Its important that they dont grow too fast, they wont have the strength to support their dense body.

Changing food you will want to do it gradually, We mixed and slowly made the mix stronger over the course of 2 weeks.  They can get loose bowels, or gas. Stick to it, they will get used to it.  Get some canned pumpkin, a spoon full of that will firm up everything quickly. We have tons of pumpkin on had, great GO TO fix!--and once you open a can you may not need all of it, toss the left overs into an ice cube tray, freeze, pop out and bag, then you have it quick to grab and thaw.  Kippah LOVES pumpkin!

Puppy food......

We used to switch from puppy food to adult formula at 4 months of age for our puppies.  Now I just wean them to an ALS formula (all life stages), so there's no switching--they just stay on the same food.    I have used Pro Plan Chicken ALS (not the shredded formula) for almost 30 years (pre-Bulldogs, too) without problems though I have tried the other formulas and several other brands including grain free and even raw diets because I wanted to make sure they got what was best for them.  When there proved to be no improved benefit, I switched back.

Some puppies develop allergies or digestive upsets necessitating switching foods to find something that works for the dog. I have never fed it, but I understand that Science Diet is not highly regarded.  When you decide what you might want to switch to, make it a gradual transition to avoid digestive upset (mine have iron stomachs and never had a problem switching, but some do).

Good luck and have fun with your puppy.

Costco dog food...

gets good reviews--haven't subscribed for a while, but even from Whole Dog Journal.  I don't have Costco near me, so never used, but it is popular on the boards.

Wonderful for you!

Bullies are the BEST!  One piece of advice, make sure your vet. specializes in Bulldogs and likes treating them.  Bulldogs are unique and the proper vet is critical. What is "normal" for bulldogs might not be seen as "normal" for all breeds. You probably already know this but I thought I'd respond. Enjoy your new puppy they are a joy. Our 1 yr. old male keeps us laughing, with his fun personality.  Sometimes crying with all the vet bills. Oh the things you do for love! LOL.

We use the Costco food...

we do the grain free salmon/sweet potato.  They have it under different names at different stores, but it is grain free salmon.  The two of ours that are on it are doing great.  One word of advice, try to put off the rabies shot for a few months, a lot of us have had pups that get demodex (mange) shortly after the shot, mainly because of the stress of teething etc and doing the shot on top of that can lower their immune systems and they break out with mites.  We usually wait until 7 or 8 months to do it and so far we've only had one puppy that got it (he had a rabies shot at 16 weeks).  Congratulations, there is nothing like a bulldog puppy!

Thanks for all the info

Thank you so much for all the quick and informative responses.  I am going to investigate the Costco food in my area and slowly get Mr. Chubbs off the Science Diet.  It just seems like a better option for him.

What you said just said about

What you said just said about the rabies shot just totally clicked with me! Molly also had mange and it surfaced shortly after that vaccine too! I definitely would have waited now knowing how much Molly's immune system was lowered due to all the early stressors. I feel like Im still unfortunately fighting an uphill battle to improve her immune system. If anyone has any suggestions for supplements to help, I'd love your input!

For supplements to boost the immune system I would use...

one pet tab daily, one 25 mg zinc, one vit e capsule and one ester C (we use 250 mg).

12 wks

and only 14 lbs.  Is that right?  I'm guessing this is a bulldog puppy.  How much are you feeding him and how often.  Science Diet is not a great food.  I know alot of breeders that feed the Kirkland brand dogfood and have great luck with it, you do want to switch him to adult food.  Food is really alot of trial and error.  What works for one could be disasterous for another.  Typically you won't see problems like allergies in young puppies.

He sounds very tiny for 12 wks.  My puppies at 7 weeks were from 13 - 17 lbs and Kohl at 16 wks was 35 lbs. If you can feel his ribs and backbone then he is under weight.

Ok now I am wondering if he

Ok now I am wondering if he is eating enough!  He is going to get his nails clipped today and I will make sure I get a weight on him.  Actually will be 12 months this Saturday.  He has been eating Science Diet (not for long after everything I have read, going to make a switch quick!)  I've been trying to follow the chart on the bag for the amount.  We've been mixing in a bit of canned food with it as well.  I would say right now he is eating about 3/4 cup, 3 times a day.  The chart on the food bag says for 10# use 1 3/4 cups per day but it jumps for 20# to 3 cups per day.  Sometimes he leaves food but I have noticed this morning he still looked hungry so I added some more but he didn't really eat it.  He has been a bit hyper in the afternoon and I know he is a puppy but things I have read said that hungry dogs get hyper so now I am worried we are messing up here.  I can not feel his ribs or backbone he feels pretty solid to us.  Next stupid question ... do you know if the size of the kibble is something I should be looking at?  Just wondering how big the Costco kibble is and if it would be too big for Mr. Chubbs.  Read something somewhere else where they said bulldog puppies on Science Diet have little heads and now that is one more thing concerning me.  Good thing we found a place for some good information to help us along this journey.   Boy how I wish he could tell me what to do!!!!  Love this little guy so we will keep chugging along until we get it just right for him.  Thanks again for so much help it really helps us newbies.  I will post his weight when he is done with his mani pedi this afternoon!

Amounts

actually seem right so I bet he weights more then you are thinking.  I he leaves food then you are probably fine, and if he's not ribby then don't worry.  But I would find a better food .  Science Diet is pretty crappy (lots of grains and fillers).  There are so many different types of food, you just have to pick one and give it a try.

I in the past I have had great luck with "Now" made by a Canadian Co Pet Curean.  Acana, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance,  Orijen are some off the top of my head that are good.  Acana may be a little high in protein for a puppy.

I feed raw now, but I fed Now for about 4/5 years and my dogs did great on it.

Sampson's Mom's picture

Deep Breath

Your little guy sounds a lot like mine at that age.  He's about 50lbs now at 10 months and his mom was about 60lbs so we figure we're right on track. Size can variey a lot depending on the parents.  Ours had smaller parents so we aren't expecting him to become a 90lb giant.  We started Sampson on a large breed food but ended up switching to a 'normal' or medium breed food.  From our research (aka reading and compairing labels) the large breed food has less protein then the same amount of medium breed food and the small breed has the most.  Everyone I've spoken with has told me they had to try a few foods and I've heard of a bulldog on just about every brand at this point.  It's just trial and error to find the one right for him.  Sampson is currently going through a stage where some days he won't eat much at all and other days he'll eat every kibble he can find; puppies are like kids that way I guess.  Ask you vet to how to determine if he's at a good weight and what sort of eating habits could be trouble.  We weight him on a regular basis (just get on the scale first the grab him and subtract your weight), if he's still gaining you're likely in a good place.

We did have a bit of a problem with kibble size with one food when he was really little because he doesn't actually chew his food he just eats it whole.  Just give him a few kibbles, if he snarfles them down then your good :D
