I just acquired a little 9 month old bully boy from rescue. Prior to his coming to us the rescue worker (foster mom) noted some spots that looked mange-y and took him to her vet. Scrapings were done and the 4 spots were demodectic mange.
In all my years in the dog world, I've never had a dog with mange, so I want to be sure to make this little guy comfy while making sure he is getting the things he needs.
He is on a high quality, no additives or grain food. She has me putting some ointment on him that is a rust color that her vet gave her, I am sorry, I'm at work and cannot remember the name of it. Her vet felt it was puppy mange.
I go to my vet this weekend with him, but wondered if there were any things that you can tell me about this concern. He had 4 spots the size of dimes or smaller, he now has 10. I plan to bathe him tonight in some shampoo I will add tea tree oil to...and continue with this stuff she gave me until I can get to the vet.
I think he may also end up with ectropian issues, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
He's a handsome, happy, active little stinker. I want to make sure I get him where he is healthy and happy always.
The ointment is likely Godwinol...
that's what we had for our boy when he had demodex. If he's getting more spots, they will most likely put him on either oral meds or dip him. Meanwhile, you can build up his immune system with a pettab daily, one 25 mg zinc tablet, one vit e, ester C, anything you can think of for immune systems. I know Helen used to have a list, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some. It takes a while to get totally rid of the mites.
It is Goodwinol
and it isn't doing much for him other than making him polka dotted...lol.
I have a vet appt for him on Saturday and will start looking into vitamins tonight. I have 5 autoimmune diseases (3 affect my skin) so I know a bit about this unfortunately.
Our other bulldog, Sherman, came to us with the worse case of flank alopecia our bully vet had ever seen, torn acl, and double entropian. He is now fully furred as I am an alopecia zealot. The vet is quite pleased with him, and me, for this :)
thank you Kathy.
the reason for mange
low immunity system....to much stress...over vaccinated...
what you can do is give his system time to fight back...cod liver tab once a day...vitc...500mg....and 1/2 teaspoon of pure honey in a cup of water every other day....
as you said give surgery a back seat.. just get him boosted up...no vaccines even if the vet starts to cry....
good luck.
question Judy...
What does the pure honey do? I've seen you recommend the cod liver tab and vit C in other threads, but the honey is a new one (at least to me for my short time on the board). I'm really intrigued by the whole raw food diet, and I always read your posts because I learn so much! :)

My swimming bully buddy!
if you go back to the civial war
what did they give the soldiers wounded in the field honey (pure) with water....think back to your grandmother and when you were sick what was the first thing she said honey and tea....
honey is a lost i will call it antibotic...alot of horse people still use honey to pack wounds in...its an old remendy lost to time...
my dogs get pure honey with the comb still in it...at least once a week....twice in the winter...warmed in mint tea for digestion....
i also recommend honey after a illness....or if you know your dog has been exposed to a illnes like kennel cough.....
when henery had his eye surgery i made sure to give him honey every other day....to boost his immunity
interesting!
I never thought of that, but it definitely brings back memories of being sick and staying home from school with my Great Grandmother while my mom was at work. :) Man...those were the good days, homemade chicken noodle soup, tea and honey and LOTS of pampering! It's a wonder my mom ever took me back after those days of "recuperating" at Rie Rie's house. :)
Just to be clear...the honey you give--is it pasteurized or not? Do you buy it at an organic food store or do you have a whole-sale honey place near you?

My swimming bully buddy!
I'll give this all a go tonight
I have to stop for some of my own medicines so I'll try this too. I think the honey I have is organic from a blueberry farm. I hope that is ok.
Working on that eye stain too. It is ... well he has a ton of it. I'm going to try a remedy to clear up the stain I read about (at work and it is at home or I'd post it.) I'm also going to tackle what is causing such a large amount of tears. His lids are very droopy. I don't know if that is just pup droop, but I'm telling you, it is more than any of the other pups I've had. I am thinking this may be the issue. You can see the conjuctuva, not all of it, but some for sure!
Newman had awful tear stains when we got him...
at 8 months. We put him on grain free food and filter his water in a Britta pitcher and they were gone in 4 weeks and haven't come back.
Grain Free Food
He is on, and has been on grain free food, so I wonder about what more I could do beside going the raw diet route, which I really would prefer not to do.
Our faucet has a filter on it that is changed regularly (well water that tastes kinda like pennies if we don't)
I really worry that it is those deep pockets in his lower lids causing this. I'll try to get some photos to post in the next couple days.
Thank you so very much for the suggestions. I truly do appreciate them. I have always felt that people dealing with these issues and having success are the ones with the best advice...your reply is exactly that and why I am here. :)
some people use tums
to change the ph..you can also try vit c 500mg and see if this works..tylan from the vets works but it is an antibotic...angel eye works also but it has tylan and is also a antibotic.... i just dont like using an antibotic in any form just in case i need to use one for a real problem...
i dont have my herb book with me but i will look up some herbs that might work...
remember it takes 30 to 60 days for anything to really show its working.....
