Hello all
We took on a 4/5 year old bulldog ,she didn't come from a great home sadly.
We need some advise re her tail the poor girl stinks so we gave her a bath but she still smells really bad on closer inspection when attempting to clean under her tail ect we have noticed it's a weeping mess :( smells like death with pusy looking wetness ... how do we go about helping this we are hoping to go for a check up at the vets in the next few weeks :)
What can we do for her for the time being as it isn't nice for her she doesn't like us messing with her rail so must be sore for her .we also are in the process of trying to trim her nails as they are over grown she doesn't like her nails being done either bless her
Any help or advice will be great fully received
If you can get her into a bath or shower...
it's usually easier than coming at her with qtips and wipes. We use Malaseb shampoo in the tail pocket, leave it in for a few minutes and then rinse throughly. Dry with a cotton pad as best you can. If it's really red or irritated Desitin will help. We use gold bond powder also to help keep it dry. Malacetic wipes are good in between baths. You can order these items from petmeds or amazon. We have a tail problem here too and it takes daiy attention. Also, a good quality grain free food is essential. If there is infection, your vet may have to prescribe something or even sedate her to clean it out and do nails. Don't let them use ACE as a sedative though, it's not safe for short nosed breeds. Congratulations and good luck!
Im going to order those items
Im going to order those items .could we use baby talcum powder until the gold stuff arrives or will just drying and cleaning it help while we wait for those items ?
Thank u :)
You can buy gold bond powder at any pharmacy...
and it's medicated so it works well. I buy those plastic ketchup picnic things with the sharp tip and pour the powder into it, easier to insert the tip into the tail pocket. Or you can use the plastic hair dye bottle same thing. Cut the tip off a little so the powder comes out easily.
Yeah we are going to town to

Ok so on further inspection
Ok so on further inspection we have found 2 bright red areas under her tail :(
They are not open sores are those hotspots ?
We have cleaned/towel dryed her tail and apple sodo cream (nappycream) on the red areas should we still apply the gold bond powder ? And if so when ie after the cream or befor or alternate the cream and powder ?
Cheers again everyone
If the red spots are at
"5" and "7" in relation to the anus, those are her anal glands. They can get pretty stinky if they're infected and/or impacted. Normally, dogs will express their own anal glands when they have good firm regular poos. If your little girl had unhealthy poo, this could be why her glands are an issue.
The vet will check the glands on her exam. If they are a problem, he'll express them. Have him show you how to do this if this is an issue for her(there are external and internal ways to do this - I would recommend you only do it externally).

Aw, beautiful!
Such a sweetie.
As for putting on the gold bond after the diaper cream, I probably would just to help it dry up some. Just dust it lightly.

Pretty girl!
Do you have styptic powder or cornstarch on hand for bleeding? Just in case you hit the quick of the nail. My girl has black nails and I am so afraid I am going to hurt her.
Yeah we have cornstarch on
Yeah we have cornstarch on hand lucky all her nails are white so pretty easy to see :) taking her to get a nice new harness tomorrow she came with a silly slip lead :/
