need help with Gracie

I just noticed last night that the fold under her right eye was irritated and red and raw.  I freaked out because she never has had this.  The fold was stuck together so I pulled it apart and it was gunky and red.  I used the medicated soap that the vet gave me and cleaned it out and dried it the best I could.  Then this morning she woke up and it was closed up again and gunky and red/raw.  I cleaned it out again with the medicated soap and tried to get it as dry as I could.  Is there anything else I should be doing to help this heal or should I just bring her right to the vet?  Any advice would be appreciated!!!

Try putting some Desitin on it...

being careful not to get any in her eyes.  That usually clears up our guys in a few days.  Also, grain free food and filtered water help prevent it (we use a Britta pitcher for our guys).

Sounds like a little eye infection to me

You might want to pop into the vet quickly for a look-see.  I always was extra extra careful with any eye stuff.  She probably needs some antibiotic drops.  Not sure I'd use soap in the eye...

Celine, I think she means UNDER the eye...

in the fold.  My guys get this too from time to time.  Sometimes it's yeast or just goo.

I think you should do both.

Celine is right every time something go on with loulou eyes Stella is right in my mind. I use the diaper rash from Walgreen works well no smell Loulou dies not Like the smell so she will try to rub it off if it smells. But with the eyes a vet is where I would be. If you remember everything Celine went thru with Stella I just would not chance it.

Chester had it last week:(

I clean the area well then i put triple paste ointment is like desitin but fragance free& hypoalllergenic. You can find this product at walgreens. Clean the fold once a day and apply the cream twice a day or until the raw and red skin goes away.

same problem!

Tucker has one fold under his right eye that sounds like it looks just like Gracie's. It just started flaring up. In  the morning it's crusty and when we wipe it then it is all red and raw. We wipe it with a baby wipe, then dry it totally. If I put anything on it he rubs his face on the ground.

Our vet did give us an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial ointment for his nose because when he sweats the little crevices on either side of his nose get all red and raw. It works on his nose but I don't want to put it anywhere near his eye.

I think it may be more of a seasonal thing with Tucker because it has just flared up now. It's funny that's it's only his one eye, his left is fine.

Is her eye watering a lot?

If so, she could have something wrong with her eye. It could be anything, allergies, a tear duct issue, lashes rubbing the eye, a scratched cornea, etc. So, if the eye is watering then she needs to see the Vet to find out if it is anything other than allergies and to find out if she needs antibiotic drops or a combination of antibiotic and steroid drops. But, if her eye isn't watering, then it could be yeast and in that case I would use some Ottomax in the fold and then use some desitin.

Ottomax???

Do you get this from your vet?? I've never heard of it.

Rx Ear Antiobiotic spelled Otomax

Panalog would work or any antibiotic cream.  I personally would skip the destitin...but thats me, I hate that stuff.  It's white, greasy and sticks to everything they rub on.

I think this is under her eye?  Even neosporin would work, just don't get it in the eye.

Otomax works great for yeast

Anywhere on a bulldog. Kix's nose rope got yeasty and a little Otomax cured it up. I actually use Boudreauxs butt paste instead of Desitin.

Butt Paste

I prefer as well, although I still never use it, LOL.  Otomax is good stuff, but it's not something I have regularily in my "vet stuff".

haven't read the other responses, but Meaty JUST had this,

and we just dry the under-eye area several times per day and then add a triple antibiotic ointment...it cleared up within 3 days..!  Hope Gracie's

is better soon!!!   this is the 3rd time he's had it, and he's okay.....we do this every time.....not saying you shouldn't consult your vet if need be!!! HUGS!

Triple Antiobic is

any ointment that contains bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B  like in Neosporin.

I would personally use something like this until the wrinkle is healed, then using Desitin.  You can use Desitin after it is healed, because Desitin is zinc oxide which is an agent that is a moisture barrier.  At this stage you don't want to seal in the moisture, it needs to have air to heal first.

I never use Desitin and haven't for 16 years and 6 bulldogs...I personally think the more stuff you coat them with the more difficult it is for nature it do what it is suppose to do.  Just clean when needed with a warm cloth

Hope that makes sense.

thanks for all the advice!

It's not her eye - it's the fold under her eye.  I called my vets office yesterday and my regular vet is on vacation so I asked the person covering if I could put desitin or corn starch in the fold to keep it dry and she said no???  So I got nervous and have only used the medicated soap.  I will go to walgreens tonight and get that fragrance free desitin because she also hates the smell!  I hope it works!  Thanks again!

Triple Paste Medicated Ointment

is the one you want fragance free and Hypoallergenic. I use a Q-tip to get to deep folds.
