Need advice on my lil rescue girl

As I ponder the feeding raw or going grain free- I know my 2 yr old male will benefit from that.  I am now looking at what is the best route for my rescue.  I have had her for 6 months now- when I picked her up from the rescue they were feeding her Science Diet 3 cups a day (she weighed a little over 30 lbs- very skinny) to put weight on her.   I thought that was a lot of food to give her in a day so I cut back and let her gain gradually.  And I switched her to Prairie Salmon. She now weighs over 40 lbs.  My problem/question:  She has a lot of stuggles pooping.  Sometimes nothing comes out, other times she has formed stools but then 20 minutes or so later feels the need to go again, other times it comes out but just hangs there.  Today she had some formed (greenish) and some drops of loose- she tried 4 times in an hours time.  It is uncomfortable for me to watch- she just tries so hard. I have given her pumpkin and that helped just a little (vet did not like that).   I have taken her to 2 vets (one was a bulldog vet)-  they noticed a growth- compared it to having a hemorrhoid-  one vet gave me  SD w/d due to having high fiber and the other injected the area with cortisone.  I have been feeding her 3/4 Prairie and 1/4 w/d and she seemed to improve some- I am now back to all Prairie and she is starting to have more trouble.  I hate Science Diet it is all junk- what can I do to help her????   She is around 4 yrs old and was used for breeding.

Aww, poor little girl.

I don't really have any suggestions, but I'm sure others will have something helpful to contribute.

It is a wonderful thing that you are doing, giving that sweet baby a loving home.

Hugs!

i have taken in rescues

and i find it takes a  while to settle in..... first thing does she have a growth in the anus like a hemmorid?  it made be painful to pass a stool so she holds on as long as she can....thats where you can get the soft and hard stool...dont go with pumpkin becasue thata  firms the stool up and make it more painful to pass.....another reason for the hard stools your talking about is she is not drinking enough water...science diet is like eating saw dust and needs lots and lots of water....if you  can swing it for a month i suggest brown rice and hamburger with chicken.... boil your chicken and hamburger....add water to the food so its wet....also i would get some preparation H and put a little on her anus if its a hemmorid or swelling and causing pain this will help alot....my casper has sb and when i got her she had such dirrhea her anus popped out and needed a stich..a little pre h helped till i got her firm again...

ask any other question you have.....would raw be better yes....less to digest less to poop and more moisture.....

I was hoping you'd chime in, Judy

You always have the best advice! So glad to have you here to help us!

How much should I feed her each meal?

..

I can feed her that- anything to help her- When she does

go her anus area does protrude.  Do I put prep H on the whole rectum area- the red growth is inside some and she does not like me near her rear-end.  There used to be a little blood when I wiped her with a baby wipe but there has not been any since the cortisone shot.  What is the best food to keep her on after the chicken-beef/rice mixture???

ok here some things

pre h is safe for the inside butt  area...we humans use it...they also have wipes you can use..this will give her some relief ...hemmorids hurt and once she feels the relief she will be pointing that butt at you (LOL)  I  would go 2 cups in the am and 2 in the pm...if losing weight increase by a cup each....add a little boiled liver in a week....keep it moist and i think you will a great difference...you should see a good difference in a week...

well while your doing this...you need to decide kibble vs raw...since your leaning to a raw diet i would start now while she is on this....are you doing raw from a grocery store or are you buying pre made ...becasue after a week i would start adding raw parts into her little boiled mixture....then slowly decrease the amt of boiling of chicken and add in more and more raw....

my bully range in at 53 to 58 lbs  and i feed 2 lbs a day....

meat 80% organs 10% bone 10%

I planned on starting with the prepared raw until I have a

chance to read some books and fully understand what I am doing.  Do I need to add supplements to Natures Variety?
