I looked back through old forums about nail cutting but still have questions..How short is too short? Does anyone recommend cutting into the quik and then using bleed stop? We have been told this is the best way, and to start when they are young. This way the nerve dies off and it doesn't hurt to cut them that short in the long run. The first experience was not pleasant but she was ok after a few minutes. Thanks for the help!
OUCH!
That's a new one to me, but then I'm not an expert on these things. I fear that if I did that to Kofi, she'd never let me near her nails again.
Do you walk her? That helps keep the nails in shape. I also got a dremel, which Kofi is afraid of. I just wasn't persistent enough when she was a puppy. I take her to get them done. That way we have a nice outing together.
You will get some great advice here, so I'm glad you found us.
I'm not sure who recommended the cutting into the quick, but remember that bullies are stubborn and have long memories.
NEVER NEVER
cut to the vein...how would you like it if i ripped your nail back and made it bleed...who ever gave you that adivse go kick them....look at the nail and where it starts to bend then clip...never make them bleed...thats horrible..... accidents happen now and them but to do it on purpose dont...it hurts...if you hear them clicking on the floor their to long...i do mine every three to 4 weeks....
Nails
Unless you want every nail session to be a fight and a traumatic event I would avoid cutting down to the quick. If you get even a drop of blood you have gone too far. Try ripping your fingernail off and see how you like it. Also do it repeatedly each time your nail grows out and let us know how long it took for you to "kill" the nerve so it doesn't hurt any more.

just trim short not all the way to the quick...
and then in a couple days/week trim more. The quick will get shorter as you shorten the nail or longer if you let the nails get long. Never heard that you can kill that nerve...Would never do that with my bullies-they would never let me touch their feet again:(
Also give lots of treats with each foot...make it a fun time
that is barbaric
why in the world would anyone think that repeatedly inflicting a painful wound to permanantly damage the nerves is even acceptable?

OMG NO!! PLEASE do not do this to you dog!!!
The only time I have EVER seen a dog "quicked" on purpose was under anesthesia and the dogs nails were so long from non care that they were curling into the pads and were infected. PLEASE do not inflict this type of pain on your dog on purpose. Just trim back as far as you can, then every two weeks trim some more. Eventually the quick will recede on it's own.
No, only trim the nails to just above the quick.
But never into the quick on purpose. That is like slicing the tip of your finger off repeatedly just to get the nail to quit growing:-) Not fun! If you accidentally nick the quick and need to use a styptic pencil that is one thing, but please don't do that intentionally. You will wind up with infection and a dog that hates having it's nails trimmed.

And in all fairness, your questions as a new Bully owner are ok.
I hope you don't ever feel like someone has spoken harshly or unkindly to you here....that is never the intent. We like to help anyone who asks, but can be pretty blunt in our responses! I am glad you came and asked the question about nails before your next nail cutting date.

very true
most of our comments were to the person who said to cut beyond the quick....we didnt mean to kick you just them !!!!!! lol
We bought a dremel for our Dozer it's great :-)
Dozer hates clippers and fights us everytime no matter how many treats or praise we give him and we never cut into the quick. But i bought a Mini mite cordless dremel off of Amazon and it is a blessing. Dozer sits quietly and tolerates the nail trim. So glad you asked before your next trim, whoever gave you that advice needs to know that they are completely wrong and that is cruel.
I Dremel too...my dogs fall asleep during their "Manicures"
and they actually get excited when they see the Dremel box. I have an actual Dremel bought at Home Depot though and not a special dog one because I use my Dremel for other things than just nails.
Well dozer doesn't get too excited..lol
But he will sit quietly and let me do each nail without a fight, the only prob i have is sometimes he wants to sniff the dremel while its running. Once he almost lost some nose skin, i had to drop it and push his head away. But he really doesnt fight at all and nail trimming time is so peaceful thanks to the dremel. Worth every bit of the 25$ i paid for it.
and when they say they don't forget
...they aren't kidding. i don't know who, how, or when Matilda got so bad about her nails, but it wasn't from me. I've always taken her to get them done but I did, at one point, buy a clipper and a nail grinder. She has only behaved maybe once or twice at the groomer and now she has them done at daycare where they grind a nail or two, give her treats, and then let her go back to play group. It takes them all day. She bites at the tools.
She hates it! I think perhaps this was from her family from 'before' letting it go so long and then someone hurt her when they started again. I don't know. Maybe it was a groomer that I took her to - I can't be sure. All I know is if you don't make it funtime and convince them it won't hurt (by actually not hurting them - lol) then it's going to be rough going.
She let me clip the split end of ONE nail on Saturday, and only let me take enough to take the sharp edge off. Nowhere near the quick. But once she realized what I was doing, forget it.
Thanks everyone who responded
Thanks everyone who responded about the nails. I'll just let them grow out some and trim the tip off once they get long enough.
