My puppies have kennel cough Im worried.......

Hello bulldogs World Forum I am new today and I have joined today because I am very concerned about my litter of two having kennel cough they are only 9 days old today I took them to the vet yesterday and they were diagnosed with kennel cough aswell as their mother Frida and my other dog Tootsie. Vet gave all of them the antibiotics including the puppies they dont cough but you can hear they are conjested and have nasal discharge mother also snorting and naisal discharge Toosie no nasal discharge but is hacking cough. Vet said if puppies are not 100% discharge free by friday they probably would need to be put on resperators and will most likley not make it.  None of my pets have ever had kennel cough ever so this is a first I read a lot about it and see that its common but my concern is for the puppies at this point of course, this is our very first time breeding Frida and I have realized very soon that this is much more tuffer then we thought. I have breed pitbulls in the past and never had any problems until now. I feel horrible the fact that I have had to help Frida so much with her babies has really brought me so close to these little puppie girls that I really hope they make it so hear I am looking for help some kind of guidence from this forum maybe some hope as well. My question is have any of you had this problem with puppies at such a young age? Did they survive? Thank you so much for reading this and I await your responces.

Kennel cough....

My Beulah had kennel cough as an infant under 2 weeks old--she'll be 13 years old next month.  Do give the antibiotics as prescribed.  Keep the vaporisor going in the room, but not right on top of them, and keep watch.  Hopefully they will beat this.  Good luck!

Thanks that does give me hope.

I hope they make it I love them so much!

aspirated pneumonia is your

biggest concern...especially in such young puppies......make sure their getting alot of fluids... keep eryone out of that room...only one person should be near the mother or the puppies....kennel cough is air borne and gets on your clothes.....bleach every time you go in or out of the whelping area... use disposable plastic or paper dishes...change the water bowl as often as 3 to 4 times a day.... becasue of the slobber

you cannot bleach enough.....50% bleach 50% water....wipe the walls the floors... clean clean clean...and again only one person allowed in and out...wash your hands before going into the puppies wash them again leaving dont wear the same clothes when going back to the puppies....

this is seriouse in puppies......

do you know where you could of picked up kennel cough...it would be a good idea to know so you can avoid it for a while.....

no visitors human or dog..allowed near the room....

I have an idea

Thank u I have an idea  where they got it from Im sure its from the vets office where my husband took Frida to get her C-section and later that week when he took her for her recheck thats when I noticed her snorting so Im sure she brought it home and gave it to puppies and my other dog. That vets office i verry poppular for bulldogs and the prices are very reasonable but easy they see over 50 pets a day too many dogs too many germs the breeder we got frida from reccomended we go there. When i seen they were sick i took them to my local vet. This morning I can say they are doing better they can sleep better with out too much conjestion but i still see stuff comming out their nose my husband says its milk but im not sure its sticky and if it dries it looks a little hint of green the vet did see it when it was white. It comes out even if they are not nurseing but when they nurse its way more so I have to wipe it off. Also the vet said I need to feed more often every two hrs and they are eating but they eat like they are starving they tug and pull I know they do have enough milk its only two of them.

my vet in ct also shut down for 3 weeks

becasue of kennel cough.....my charlie had eye surgery and two days latter he had it....i was pissed but their is nothing you can really do for kennel cough .... i did not use antibotics for any of my 6 that also got it...but they are adults.....but my vet  was  ready for no charge to supply me with anitbotics...have you spoken to the other vet...i would let them no what happened....they may step up and help you....

keep them eating.... keep that room clean ...and you should be ok

Yes I called them

Yes I called them the day I noticed but they said bring everyone in so we can check them I just didnt want to risk it, there are no appointments and I didnt want to wait too long so I was over charged over here at my local vet maybe im wrong but is 73. dlls ok for just fridas antibiotics she is 60 pounds.

Hey Judy

I just read about aspirated pneumonia and Im scared! Vet said lungs sounded clear but I did bottle feed them the first week at night because Frida didnt want to be with them when she was sleeping bad moma! so I took it upon me to boddle feed and I would squezz the bottle to make sure milk would come out and at times it would be to much and milk would come out of nose I stop boddle feeding completely a couple days ago but they still have what my husband thinks is milk comming out of nose especially when nursing what can I do to prevent this now that they are eating every two hrs and they eat like they are starving???

Do not pull them off the

momma when they are nursing.  If you feel you must, put your finger in their mouth to break the suction before removing them otherwise that could cause aspiration.  I would just get a big box of Kleenex and sit there blotting their noses as the milk comes out.  They have some difficulty breathing due to the upper respiratory infection, plus the milk has probably let down real good now, so it's coming out faster than then can swallow it.  Good luck!

Ok Micki will try that right now

will keep everyone posted thanks

Micki

My husband bought them one of those baby excuse my language baby booger sucker the ones they use when a baby is first born its like a sucktion pump he says when I see something comming out I should use it to get it out but I dont know if thats safe? he said he saw the vet using it after they were born.

judy wilson's picture

no

it sounds like their eating ok...dont squeeze the bottle when its in their mouths....relax a little count to ten....new born do sound conjested in a way...i cant really describe it....but if their eating let them eat....

the vet was just clearing the fluids from their throats... just like human new borns....you could by accident do some damage...

relax a little.....as long as their eating their doing ok....

Im not bottle feeding anymore

Im not bottle feeding anymore so that wont be a problem I guess i will just continue to just wipe there little noses. Thx

judy wilson's picture

good....and relax a little it

sounds like your doing the best you can...and thats all you can do....

as for the other vet i would bring the vet bill to them....try to work out some thing...a free exam...some antibotics ... a credit to your account...you never know till you ask...

It's safe to use the suction bulb

Squeeze it, hold it, place on the nostril and let go rapidly. Repeat and repeat as needed. I had a puppy that sounded congested for quite sometime and she always had milk poring out her nose. Sometimes I held her upside down to help the milk run out. I even sucked out milk out her nose with my mouth, (can't believe I admitted that, but when your scared and can't get the nose bulb quick enough) which was very effective.

Where do u live??

You're not the only one...

Sucking the milk out with your mouth is the quickest and easiest way (probably most effective).........many people do this, and I've learned that they do this with human newborns, too..  When you're nervous, it's difficult to get that snot sucker situated directly over their tiny nostrils.  I think the tissues will do the job though.  And, listen to Judy--try to relax a little.  Amazing when you take those deep breaths and sit back how you can see the situation a little better.  Hope you had a good night.  Keep us posted!

Ha

I was trying to act embarrassed. Truth be told, it's my favorite method and it's definitely the most effective method.

Hi, I currently have a litter

Hi, I currently have a litter of 9 puppies just turned 4 weeks old.  I often see some milk coming out of their noses.  It has concerned me, so  I have used the suction bulb which I received from my vet and it does help a little but I've found it's already out of their noses and we use a baby wipe to clean further.  I do have a little (runt) baby girl that we've been helping along and I too did not like the bottle it did make milk come out of their noses, so I use a glass eye dropper and let her slowly suck and lick about 4 dropper full 3 times a day along with feeding on mama.  Sounds like you are a little stressed as we were when we brought them home (and this is our second litter) but after about 2 and half weeks you will rest a little easier, get a routine going and everyone will be fine.  PS... yes they do sound a little congested at times.  Good Luck and keep us all posted.

Hi,How are your puppies

Hi,

How are your puppies doing?

Much Better

Hello everyone I am happy to report that the puppies are doing much better! They are able to sleep much better they have grown a lot more and seem to be doing fine they still have some milk comming out so I try to keep there heads up when nursing and that I think has helped. Frida and Tootsie are aslo better. The puppies are now 15 days old and I am anxiously waiting for them to open their eyes I really wish I could post pictures of my baby girls but I think I read in the forum rules that is not allowed unless you are planning on keeping them. :-( Thanks so much to everyone for there help and support!
