my beloved dog got surgery on jan 16 2011 for bladder stones he could barely pass urine he would sqaut for a min then walk 10 feet and do the same thing and i discovered blood dirpping from his penis i took him to the vet they x rayed and said he had bladder stones and two were stuck in his urethra so they did sugery on him right away they ended up pushing the two stones stuck in his urethra back into his bladder and remove stones threw his bladder after the suregery he was great alittle sleepy but in 2 days back to normal so i aways would watch his pee when taking him for walks to see if i could see blood never when i left him home was there any blood on his pads but tiwce i saw little reddness i thought maybe he would pee normal during walk like mark his spots just one out of 12 pees was red so i took him back to vet it was 3 months after his surgery oh also i switched his diet after his surgery he was on med i cal adult food then i switch to med i cal vegatian food both kibbly and wet canned food thats what the vet said to give him also lots of water the first surgery was 1700 did all the x ray sent the stones to the lab to see what they were made of they said too high protein in his diet so ok . oh may 29 2011 at 12 45 i take bricks to the vet thats his name i say i saw little bit of reddnes in his urine twice but never on his pads and he pees on them everyday when im out never blood well vet xrays him and says and show me where that he got stones again the he needs surgery again i was like he just had sugerey isnt there any medication u can give him so he can pass them or if i get sugery this time am i going to have to get it again in 3 months he like theres no gaurentee he said i could try to inducce the bladder and remove stones with a catheter in his penis he said this may not work cause male dogs urethra is smaller than a females and females have a better chances of it work i was like how much is it 300 i was like ok do this he said he be able too come home at 6 to 630 pm at 430 he called me said catheter didnt work and stones are stuck in his urethra so he has to do surgery i said ok on the phone at 9 05 he called saying bricks died after surgery was done they where warming him up with towels and removed oxgen and his hreat gave out and it happend so fast he tryed every thing. now its been so sad he was turley my best firend did everything together run walk play in the backyard watch tv on the couch and sleep together even car rides he sat shot gun and the dog park was like disney land for him so my problem is sorry for the long post he first tryed with catheter at 430 was finshed they put him under for that then at 905 he called saying he passed well did he put him under anaesthetic twice is that allow they wouldnt do it on a human why a litle dog which it is his birthday today MAY 2 2011 he is 2 now he passed away 3 days before his birthday i ve watched the surgey for the bladder stones its like 15 mins long well with prep and watching the dog after maybe 2 hours i would think so they were done the first surgery at 430 when i got the call they must of not started sec one right away did he keep him under for 5 hours or put him under at maybe 4 and then maybe at 7 or 8 pm again is that even allowed i feel so bad cause i wanted a cheaper way than 1700 but it cost me my best friend he never said to me if i do it with the catheter and it dont work then we have to do surgery on him and cut him open this would be a higher chance of him dieing and if i just do suregery and put him under once it would be alot safer i feel i lost my world feel so guilty trying to save abit of money
shorter post than my main one
my dog had bladder stones on jan 16 2011 had sugery to remove and was perfect after then i saw alittle bit of blood in pee so i took him back it was 3 months later i thought better go see if its anything before it gets worse well they x rayed him and it was stones again its now may 29 vet said sugery again i said isnt there any way else he said i can try use catheter and pull out threw the penis but it may not work he said for females it works better so i said try that he did at at 430 the same day he called saying it didnt work and the stones stuck in his penis he needs surgey right away i said ok at 9 05 he called saying he passed away so the surgery to cut open bladder and remove stones take 15 mins seen on youtube but im guesiing for prep and watching dog after 2 hours so if he started at 7 pm was my dog under from before 430 to 9 pm or did they put him under till 430 then at 7 p, put him under again can they even do that not to humans
Sorry
Dont have any advise just wanted to say i am so sorry.
Very sorry...
I was so sorry to read about the loss of your beautiful bulldog. I do not have advice for you in this sad situation. Unfortunately, it does seem to happen too often to Bulldogs that they have complications from/after anesthesia. You have my sincere sympathy.

I have no idea about surgery
I have no idea about surgery twice in one day, but I wanted to tell you how very sorry I am for oyur loss he surely was a handsome boy.
Heartbreaking
I'm so sorry about what happened. I don't think you should feel guilty, you didn't do anything wrong. Sometimes these things just happen - you were following the advice of his vet, a trusted professional. I do not know if it is the fault of the vet or just a freak thing but I hope that your heart will heal in time. So awful. :(
I am very sorry about Brick
Thankfully, we've had no bad experiences with anesthesia or surgeries.
My heart goes out to you on the loss of your best buddy.

My heart is aching for you and bricks.
Steve, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how you feel and I know that we all dread the day that we have to say goodbye to our best buddies. They are family and nothing less! Steve I worked for 16 years in the OR and I can tell you that there were many days when patients were returned to the operating room on the same day of their original surgerys for one thing or another. It's not what you want to see happen, but it does happen. Some of those people make it through those second surgeries and some do not. English bulldogs are not easy dogs to administer anesthesia to. Their anatomy presents an increase risk any time a bulldog has to be anesthestitized. That's one of the main reasons why it's so important to have a Vet who is extremely familiar with the breed. They are different from other dogs and I think that is one of the reasons we love them so much. They are special!!
I think it's completely understandable Steve for you to consider trying to save money in this ecomony today. Sadly, not all of us have unlimited funds available for needs that arise and you had already gone to great lengths to give Bricks a healthy and happy life. So please, please do not feel guilty for choices you made in regard to his care. Stop and think about all the wonderful things you DID do for Bricks. I saw his picture and he was precious. I won't allow you to blame yourself for what happened!! Things happen for a reason and we don't always understand them but you know you loved Bricks and that's what you must focus on now. I have a feeling he had a wonderful life and would not want you to feel sadness when you think of him. Focus on the good memories as best you can.
I do think you have some valid questions that need to be answered. I would ask the Vet exactly what happend and when it happend. You are entitled to that information. I don't think anyone can make sense of this except the Vet who was responsible for his care.
I send warm hugs your way my friend. You had a beautiful boy!! Time will make things easier but for now, take care of yourself and don't be too hard on yourself.
Kind regards, nursebunny
I don't think you can second guess
You made reasonable decisions based on the information you were given coupled with the fact that you were worried about your buddy.
As for being subjected to anesthesia twice in the same day - I've seen it done in people many times. Still, that's neither here nor there. So much would depend on the type of anesthesia, the length of time of exposure, reversal, etc. Bottom line - I don't think it would have made a difference.
I am so very sorry you had to go thru this. Questioning yourself is mormal (I've been there), but pointless. You obviously cared for Brick a great deal. I am sorry for your loss.
Olivia
So Very Sorry for Your Loss
Hope your heart heals soon. Bricks is in eternal peace now.
How terribly sad. I am so sorry for your loss.
I can't say what would have been right, you made decisions based on the information you had at the time as did your vet.
My deepest sympathy to you.
