my baby has a bad heart

I recently purchased a new puppy to sadly hear he as a stage 4 heart murmer and at least 5 congenital problems. we have only had him for 5 days and yet he is already part of the family. the pet store(yes big mistake on my part) said they will gladly exchange him.( can you believe that! hes not a shirt) my husband and i are distraut but have decided to love him to no end. the cardiologist said he has a 60% chance that he will be fine and 40% chance that he will have problems. we know that if we take him back they will put him to sleep!( neverrrrrrrrr will we let this happen.) He is the most special thing i have ever met! he is so smart and sweet. Am i crazy for enduring what could potentially be heartbreak??? all i know is that my heart beats for him and i will do whatever i can to ensure he is taken care of. I am new to the site and to having the joy of owning one of thease special babies. any advice would be great. thanks.

I'm so sorry...

we'll just hope and pray he's one of the 60% that doesn't have problems.  Bless you for keeping him and giving him the best life you can.  You will get lots of valuable advice on this forum.

Aww he's so cute

I'm sorry he received this diagnosis.  I too hope that he will be ok.  I'm glad to hear that he will be staying with you from here on out - I would have made the same decision.  I have no advice or experience with this issue, but will keep lots of good vibes for your baby.  Please keep us posted on him.

I am so sorry to hear that

this is why it is so important to make people aware of pet stores...they get all there dogs from puppy mills which are prisons for dogs and are tortured there...I go up to Orange County once a month to protest puppy mills at various locations to help bring awareness to this epidemic.  Once again I am so sorry to hear about your baby...I would recommend contacting your local humane society or spca to inform them of what happened and propose an investigation to have there supplier looked into and shutdown.  Puppies are not products they are loving creatures who deserve nothing but the best.  I am sure he is a fighter and I hope everything turns out...it is good to know he is being loved unconditionaly

thank you and yes i am

thank you and yes i am already in the works to contact consumer affairs to shut the store down. i am finding out now that it is a normal thing at the perticular shop they have numerous complaints for selling sick dogs! i also looked up his breeder "martin roy leon of hollywood bulldogs" he has numerous complaint on him as well for selling sick bulldogs. i will make sure that i do everything i can to help others to not make the same mistake. He too is a puppymill owner!!! thank you again and i will continue to post his status.

hollywood bulldogs

that is def one of the bigger scams...i believe it is the same guy that was operationg california bulldogs and is currently under investigation...poor pups but there are so many people out there right now trying to put a stop to it and its making forward progress...once good luck on all that has happened and give the little guy a nice big kiss and know that atleast he is in a loving home now

I am so sorry to hear that, but think you are awesome....

To have the attitude you have. Give him a chance. And...do you have a good Bulldog vet? I would definitely make sure your regular vet is a knowledgeable Bulldog vet or has seen a lot of this breed.

Best of luck to you, and again, you are a very special couple to keep this little guy and love him as long as you can. He is one lucky, special boy!

thank you

and no, i took him to my normal vet who has taken care of my cat. He is an awesome vet but dont think he does not specialize in the breed. i looked up bulldog specialists and have an appt to see one. thank you again for the encouragement. and all prayers are appreciated for my lil boy henry.

Hi Tavia, I am sorry about Henry

But, if Henry has a bad heart, at least he is with people who have REALLY GOOD hearts.  I am glad you are going to keep him and treasure him.

I will keep you and Henry in my prayers.

Thank you so much. it has

Thank you so much. it has been my favorite breed for some time. i finally have the financial resources to own one and its sad that he has this condition but i wouldnt see it being any other way. i am a big believer that everything happens for a reason and he was meant to join our family and lives. and just meant to be with us.thank you for the prayers all the comments make me stronger!

I'm so sorry...

but I am in the same boat as you. I just  purchased my first bully last week as well, but from a breeder, not the pet store. Sebastian has a grade 3 murumur and severe pulmonic stenosis. They can't do the surgery because his coronary arteries are not normal. My breeder is letting me keep him and giving me another puppy. I also decided to keep him and give him lots and lots of love for as much time as he has. Hopefully both of our babies will live for a long time. This site is wonderful for giving advice and just being supportive. Welcome!!! King Henry is very beautiful and tell him Lord Sebastian sends bully healthy vibes his way.

wow

that is amazing that he will give you another. the pet shop i got my henry from offered to give me another puppy but i would have to return my baby. we all know the outcome if i were to return him. i would never let that happen. as for your baby, what did your vet say his worst/best case scenerio be? life span? my henry also has too many defects to operate the specialist said best case would be that he will be fine and that his condition would be special to him meaning his heart would not effect him medically. wouldnt that be great!

I am so sorry for you both

This breeder should be shot!. You both are great for keeping him. He is beautiful. I pray he will be in the 60 pre cent range. This is so sad. But I want to say welcome and I will start praying for him to have a long life. Even healthy bullies lives are not long enough.

my breeder has been awesome...

through all this. She was just broken hearted when I called her last week and told her what was going on. They didn't really give him a life span, just that the right side of his heart is already showing some thickening and that eventually it will start to enlarge since it has to work so hard to pump the blood through. We're hoping for at least 2-3 years, but I will take all the time I can get. My heart just aches for your little guy and for mine. My breeder isn't going to use those parents anymore either, since she doesn't want to pass any more problems on to other litters. Out of Sebastian's litter, one little girl was born deaf, but Sebastian is the only one with heart problems.

See that's not right

I have known a few well known/good breeders that have great healthy stock, and sometimes a pup could have a major heart defect. People are so ignorant to the subject. It doesn't always mean a breeder is bad, this breed does and can/will HAVE ISSUES. Even the best of breeders can admit the faults that show up and know it can be a crap shoot sometimes, even with the healthiest of parents. I really do get ticked when people can be so ignorant.

On the subject of your little man, god bless you, it is depressing to see pet store dogs in such shape. He is beautiful though, and you can't be mad at her for going with her heart. I however, wouldn't get the second pup from the pet store. You're already in store for a lot, and we can't save all of them. I know someone will get that puppy, but don't burden yourself too harshly, get from a good breeder and get yourself a second bully that won't be as much of an issue "knocks on wood"... You'll be able to benefit from this learning experience in some way. With that said, pet stores will stay in business and the puppy mills won't stop. It doesn't matter if some people don't support it or not, people will go to pet stores and buy dogs they see in the window, and that's just how it is. Wish it wasn't, but that's what it is.
