My 8 month puppy died unexpectedly

My girlfriend and I received a call last Wednesday that we will never forget.   Our 8 month pure bred Ralph collapesed at a doggy day care and died.  We were told that when he arrived at the animal hospital that he was DOA.  The vet recommened that we get an autopsy so we are waiting for the results.  I was also able to see a video of the situation.  He was coming back in from being outside when he collapsed.  While on the ground his feet were moving, his head was bobbing a little and then nothing.

I know we will receive some more answers with the autopsy but that will not be for some time.  If anyone has any insite or has heard of this happing before please share.  I know this post may be a little graphic but I also thought there may be some people here to help.

How sad =(

I wonder if he got overheated.  Poor baby, and poor you.  I'm so sorry for your sudden loss of Ralph :(  I hope that once you get the results you can have some closure and peace.  (((hugs)))

I am so sorry about Ralph.

My first thought would be that in playing, Ralph got overheated.  Unfortunately that is not uncommon with our bullies.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

So sorry

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby.  I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you to watch that video.  I'm not sure I would have been able to get through it!

We had a similar experience with our Schultzie a couple of months ago.  He was at the Vet clinic recovering from a bout of pancreatitis (we think) and he had been extremely sick for 48 hrs.  After treatment he was scheduled to come home the next morning.  I had gone to the clinic to have a quick visit with him because I hoped it might make him feel better.  I think I was wrong.  When I walked in to see him, he was quitely sitting in his kennel watching all the other dogs who were patients and in the room with him.  When he saw me... He wanted to get out and go home!! Of course I could not take him and I made the visit brief because I felt that my visit had upset him more than helping.  I got home and a couple of hours after I got a call from the Vet wanting to "fill me in" on Schultz.

They had let him go outside with some of the other dogs to go potty and mind you it was not a hot day but kind of rainy and humid.  They said schultz had started having trouble breathing and his tounge had turned purple and he was really struggling to breath.  The vet techs ran and got the Vet and he grabbed Schultz and took him inside and intubated him with a breathing tube and gave him oxygen and revived him.  The Vet said he couldn't explain it!! It scared him to death he later admitted to me.  Thank God, this happend when he was in the hospital.  These things can happen so quickly with bulldogs.  I think he had gotten over stimulated with my visit and was under such stress from being away from home.  If he had now been where he was at the time of this incident I might be asking the same question you are.  I have seen first hand just how fast a bulldog can get into trouble with over heating and over exertion. From what you describe in the video, it almost sounds like Ralph had a siezure.  I hope you get some answers soon and please post them if you don't mind.

I'm so very sorry for your loss!!

I am very sorry for your loss

Bulldogs can have issues when they get overexcited, overheated, etc.  It's also possible that he may have had an elongated palate that, combined with all the excitement, caused his demise.  Getting an autopsy will tell you for sure.  In any event, it's a devestating thing to have happen - I am so very sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to you and your Lady.

Poor baby boy. The only things I could think of would be heat stroke if he was outside too long, or a heart condition that had been undiagnosed. Please update us when you get the necropsy results.

I am so sorry....

I am so very sorry....

that is just the saddest news.

Couple of things come to mind.  You do not say where you live but maybe it was a warm day and he overheated while playing outside???

I am so very deeply sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry

I'm so sorry for your loss.  How devastating for you.

What part of the country are you in?  Was it a warm day? Was he playing hard & really panting?   My first thought is heat stroke.  If the daycare doesn't see many bulldogs they wouldn't know to keep him calm & cool on warm days.
