More fun with diets

Okay! So Matilda was seen by a third and different vet during visit number 2 (in 8 days). It turns out that the runny right eye was caused by dystichia. They removed the one lash inside the lid and gave me medicated ointment. (Sigh). Did I mention that we never had this problem before because Matilda didn't have eyelashes when she was adopted? Or, not enough to cause a problem anyway...

Seems better. Less blinking and goop today.

We got Mometamax for the ear. We'll see how that goes.

Face is calmer otherwise, eats like a champ, plays, and has lost about 3 pounds. 3 pounds, already?

Mixing raw beef with the remaining raw chicken formula and seems to tolerate it well. Is not pooping at the same time anymore, which irritates me a great deal because its hot and we can't stand out there all day. A tablespoon of canned pumpkin usually does the trick. However, it is not to be found in ANY of the stores I've been to. None. I've been told "we only sell it at thanksgiving".

So I bought a butternut squash, cooked it, mashed it, and served her some. Hopefully that will work. As an aside, this is the first time I've used the stove to cook something in several months, and it was for her :)

Did I mention I got yelled at by someone I work with for feeding my dog raw? I just mentioned I was kind of excited to see if I could help with the systemic allergies and I'd decided to try a reputable brand and she said "yeah excited to see what happens until she gets sick".  I dunno, she doesn't seem any worse off than before. As for the benefits, we're gonna stick it out since she likes the food so much.

Kinda OT to your post - Dystichia question

Did you have to have the dog sedated for this procedure?  Maggie will be getting treated for dystichia in the near future, but they want to put her out for it and freeze off the eyelashes.  If yours was only one eyelash, that may be the difference as she has several in one eye.  Of course, the thought of the sedation makes me nervous - but we'll get her spayed at the same time. Just curious.

Detox

I'm glad that you were persistent with the vet, and that they discovered the eyelash problem! I can relate to the sigh about the medicated ointment. One of my dogs is being treated for an eye condition right now, and it's a little heartbreaking each time I approach him with the little tube of medication, because he runs from me like I'm wielding a spiked flail. Regarding the ear, face, and paw-licking issues, I'm no expert on raw feeding, but I'm also someone who has been in the process of transitioning my dogs, so I've been doing a ton of reading. In this process, I've come across some information about a "detox" period that often occurs when switching a kibble dog to raw (and someone here may have already mentioned this in response to one of your earlier posts, so bear with me if I'm repeating old information). During this detox (which can last for a few weeks), dogs are often itchier, redder, more foot-licky, and more weepy-eyed than they may normally be before it all clears up. So, I guess the phenomenon of things sometimes briefly getting worse before they get better may apply here (although I do think experimenting with the different proteins is a good idea). Both of my guys, who have terrible allergies, have been doing very well on Nature's Variety (one's horrible rashy tummy is finally beautiful, pink, and blemish-free, and the other's persistent folliculitis is going away - thank goodness, as I'd forgotten what he looked like with hair on his forehead). I hope things continue to look up for your girl, and please do continue updating about her progress, because it's so nice to read about someone else's experience during this transition. Finally, of all the unlikely places to find canned pumpkin, you may consider calling or checking in person at your local small pet supply store. I haven't found any in the supermarket (apparently, there's been a pumpkin famine this year, due to too much rain derailing harvests), but I did inexplicably encounter cans at my pet store while browsing for other things. Go figure!

Canned pumpkin - I found Organic

but I had to go to 3 different stores first.  I hope they aren't out for Thanksgiving, I love pumpkin pies.

I found canned pumpkin

at Target next to the green beans and corn and peas.  Super Target the one with full groceries.  We have been following Matilda's story because I am so curious about the raw foodies.

more fun with food

I'm going to try to respond to everything here but bear with me as I can tend to ramble...in case you didn't already note that. :)

The beef Nature's Variety seems to be working well but it seems like the more beef I add she gets gas. So on next swap, we'll try a different protein, probably rabbit. I know she has eaten bison and beef (which cause some intense fragrance. wow.) but I don't think we've seen how she would do on the remaining venison, lamb, and rabbit varieties. However, I am amazed that she was able to do this cold turkey (ha!) without any huge difficulties.

Eye boogers improved markedly. No more than was usual (2 days since treatment) and as some have said may continue to improve. Her feet are a bit better now, I notice they are still a bit redder than they should be but the greyish white stuff she accumulates overnight seems to be decreasing. She does not get as pissed off at me when I try to look in between her back toes.

As with the other time she had an ear infection, the moment the meds went in she started leaving it alone. It looks much less swollen but still smells corn-chippy.

Her chin looks good. She used to get zits and one of them looked like an adult human with small purple 'cystic' acne. I cleaned it and applied creams but it is actually gone now.

Her eyes are starting to brighten again, which is good. They look clearer and are cleaner. The infected wrinkle is healing.

She hasn't lost the 'droop' in her lower lids, but the vet said that she's dropped so much in weight that it could be that. When I adopted her she was 72 pounds and now weighs about 53 or so. The last two or three pounds she's lost have been since the food change. I will try to get feedback from others on here as to what to add if I feel like she's getting too skinny. I could switch her yogurt to 1% or something, for instance.

She only had one or two tiny lashes. What my vet did was hold her down with a special bulldog-shaped muzzle, applied some topical numbing cream, and plucked them. As far as danger, there was very little. She said that should they, or more of them, return (and the chances are they will but I haven't read up on the costs, risks, etc of the treatments) that what they would likely do involves a laser. Much like laser hair removal. At least I think that's what she said. I think the dog would be 'twilight sedated?' meaning it wasn't under general anesthesia. Or something. I haven't entirely processed the whole eye thing yet, this is new.

She is still shedding. I can't tell if it is less. I hope it will be less someday; things weren't always this way.

But I have to say that her fur in general is very soft and almost reflectively shiny.

oh and i forgot

i cooked a butternut squash from fresh. it was all i could find in any chain grocery store.

she went this morning. kinda soft & light. But still "less". it was cool enough outside so that we could take a full walk to get things going.

we don't have SuperTarget here with full grocery. Some of them have "more" groceries, but we don't have the full-grocery WalMarts and Targets here in New England. We do have Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, but I highly doubt Whole Foods would have pumpkin in a can (in fact they'd probably never let me shop there again if I asked for it). lol

and did I tell you I'd given her a raw beef bone last week and sat there watching her with it? i chickened out after about 30 minutes because she was trying to take it all over the house with her but man, she LOVED it.

I feed the Bravo patties to Sadie. She gets 2 a day. I mix

brocolli, blueberries, pumpkin, squash, and no salt green beans.  Periodically, I'll give her some mango.  Took awhile to figure how much to give,  she dropped quite a few lbs but we now are maintaining at 50lbs.

great update and

just want to add that at one time we were giving Rex raw beef bones, which he absolutely loved to death. Unfortuantely he broke one of his back teeth on it, so we went back to the nylabones, much to his disappointment, but I cannot risk him knawing so hard on a bone and breaking another tooth. Thanks for the raw food upate, sending positive thougths this will work for the both of you!

and we're off

Matilda goes easy on real bones. Mostly just tries to get all of the good stuff off, but she doesn't seem to chew as hard on that as she does on her nylabone. But good to know!

In a little while I'm off to an adjacent town where there's a Trader Joe's and a high-end pet supply store. Hopefully we'll be able to get some fun stuff!

She went to daycare yesterday so that could have been the source of the gas (if she stole someone's uneaten cookie) but I'm going to wait and see.

Exhausted (still!) this morning from that. She's sleeping right now, and we went to the park because it was finally cool enough to go play. I was very happy to see her finally play and dance around with a tennis ball. It has been a long time since we could do that.

Beef and gas

I had the same problem with the beef when I first started mine on the Natures Variety raw.  But after being on it for 2 years or more I have no problem with the beef. If you look at the contents of the pattie the beef to me looks like it has far more fat then the other meats. I like the venison and bison...but lately i have not been able to find it. So right now they are on rotation with chicken, beef and lamb.

What I will say is I have trouble keeping weight on them with raw only. AND I can't afford to keep increasing the raw. When Ester was nursing the babies we were feeding her 3 patties a day (that equates to $27.50 every 4 days for raw) + kibble. Once I add some kibble back I can get the weight right. I also have one that gets constipated on raw only, no problems when I add some kibble in.

Detox and to see a good change is usually at least 6 to 8 weeks. According to my vet it takes that long for one dog food to get out of the system.

Audrey gets very gassy from salisbury steak!

raw of course, I don't feed her anything cooked, but for some reason that makes her very gassy. She is eating london broil right now (they had it on sale-she LOVES it!) and she's defintiely more gassy than when she eats chicken.

The pre-made patties are VERY expensive! It was costing me $150 a month for just one dog, I HAD to switch her. Now we just go to the grocery store and get what's on sale. I can feed Audrey raw meat for less than what a premium bag of kibble costs. The london broil was on sale for $1.98 a pound, which is more than what we normally pay for dog meat, but since she's the only dog now we are splurging for her. Even with meat that expensive we can feed her for less than $60 a month!  I don't have trouble with her weight either, she has maintained the same weight now for 9 months.

you may not need the pumpkin!

a raw fed dog is not going to poop like a kibble fed dog, Audrey does NOT go every day! Unless your dog is really struggling or poops white chalky stuff, it may just be she doesn't have much waste to eliminate, and giving the pumpkin is only doing exactly that, giving her body some undigestible matter to eliminate. That you have to pick up.

If she is truly struggling and can't go, you can try more skin/fat, or even a bit of liver to help.

i buy alot of things at whole food.....

their is one in hadley mass...they have chemical free food....they have goats milk which i give as a treat on friday nites .....i wish i could freeze it and make pops for them....your doing good on your diet....dont add to many things.....i was not able to see how much bone your adding....that would stop the loose stools...increase the bone content....use a couple of lamb ribs....one a day till the stool is  firm...then back off....

beans will casue loose stools....remember dogs eat meat as a primary food....veggies should never be more than 5% or less of the diet....
