Mites
Submitted by Karen on July 29, 2012 - 3:19pmI need some advice. My 6 month old bulldog has Demodex Mites and the vet treated him with Ivomex. He has had seizure from this. He is going back to the vet tomorrow and I am not putting him back on this no matter what she says. I am now feeding him Omega 3 fish oil 1200 mg. plus Ester c 500 mg. The pet food store suggested feeding him Zinpro Dog food. It has Zink in it. Can I not just add zinc to his meal as a vitamin? thanks everyone.

Yes you can....
I always just gave mine a 25 mg zinc with their meals. How many spots does he have? My first bully only had a couple and they treated him with a topical cream, Goodwinol I believe was the name of it. My other boy had several of the dips. We've never used the oral meds.

He has 3 spots. I will buy some zinc today. I read that dogs can get quite sick when they have the dip. Because he got so sick on the Ivomec I really don't want to dip him.

I had to work up to it slowly
I had to work up to it slowly and then he got 1.02 ml. He has not had it since Saturday and he is a different dog this morning. Happy, eating, playing I think the Ivomac was not good for him.
Ivermectin
is a horse wormer and it's strong stuff. It can make dogs sick. That dose seems strong. The dips can also make dogs sick, it is literally like dipping them in posion. They can fight off the demodex themselves if you caught it early and it's not too serious. Boost the immune system with a good supplement. You can try Goodwinol as well. I've hear it is not very effective.
Would recommend you put him on some kind of Immune Booster
I have Onslow on Astragalus but there are a few choices. Onslow got sick from it too (but not seizure), i had to split the doses in half and give with food. Sorry your boy got so sick - it is strong stuff :(
Just came back from the vet.
Just came back from the vet. Took another skin scrapping and said mites are gone. I have put him on Zinc as well as fish oil, and Ester C hope it does not come back. Ivomac is very strong stuff. Will not do that again. Thanks everyone for the great advice.
