Max the Cleft Palate baby...hopefully posting legally this time. sorry!

Hello All,

I have a fabulous little 7 week old bully boy with a cleft palate and I am trying to find out all I can to help him. We are trying to get him surgery and I wanted to know if anyone had had experience with it or knew anyone. Did the surgery go well? Did you really like the vet? Is the dog still alive or did it have any problems after the surgery? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Every time I try to post a picture I get knocked off so I will post a picture after this goes thru.

Cleft Palate

Everything I've heard (no personal experience) is not favorable for cleft palate puppies. I have seen an older cleft puppy with a minor cleft that was fine.  I would think it would have to do with the severity of the cleft as to their ability to survive and thrive. I do not think I would bring a cleft palate puppy home. As a breeder this is one of those things that you are responsible for.

Your original post was probably removed because (i.e. you are not an approved breeder and/or request for monetary support).

I wish the puppy the best.

Curious if you gave the bitch folic acid during her pregnancy?

Yes Olivia was on folic acid but I was giving her 400mg and a prenatal that had it in the pill also. I am guessing it did not add up to 800mg never could get an amount from the bottle. This was my first litter, I have whelped many litters before for others and the vet I used always checked for clefts. I used my vet and in the excitement of making sure everyone was breathing and all that goes on I ASSUMED my vet checked right after pulling them out, the other vet always did. I got Max home and he was madder than hell every time he nursed so I went to put my finger in his mouth to check for his ablity to suck and there it was. I was so mad at myself and the vet. He was already home, mad as a wet hen and very active. I put a bottle in his mouth with a fast nipple and the rest is 7 weeks later. Would I do it again? No. But he is working so hard and such a trooper I, as a responsible breeder, plan to do everything in my power to help him and I will be keeping him. I want to make sure he is always cared for and has the medical attention he needs. If I must home him then they will probably be a breeder or a vet who is very capable of handling anything that might come up. So far he is thriving and tries most of the time to be King of the playpen. He actually tried to eat hard food for the last 2 days. Doesn't get much but he is trying. He likes his bottle better anyway. Spoiled rotten.

Max is loved by everyone that meets him and I know everything will work out in the end. Thank you for well wishes for him.

He terrorizes even the biggest of my females! He thinks he is hot stuff.

I haven't had experience with this, but remember hearing about someone who did have successful surgery for this condition.  Of course, it depends on the severity of the cleft.  But, since your puppy appears healthy and has made it to 7 weeks (most only last days), he probably would do fine.  Speak to your vet.  This puppy is adorable.  Good luck and all good wishes.
