marking?

i asked for rescue advice earlier.

today's my first day with the new rescue.

he responds to 'no' when he starts looking like he wants to hump, or tries to, but about 15 minutes ago he marked on a rug in the house. i put him in his crate for a bit, then outside, then back in. He peed outside a few times. He immediately went back to the chair and made like he was going to do it again. I said 'no' firmly and he slunk away.

i again put him into his crate for a little bit. just now i finally let him out and he's asleep on a dog bed nearby and Matilda is up on the sofa with me.

he can't be neutered yet because he's emaciated and has mange.

do you think i should get 'bands' or whatever those are? never been thru that before.

anyway here's some pics. he's only been on treatment for a few days so yeah, it is as bad as it looks. bizarre that this is a microchipped dog...

Marking

is basically normal behaviour, something that any male dog will do, given the chance. Neutering might stop it, or but chances are it won't.

The only thing you can do to stop marking is telling him off - and take him outside. Show him a place he is allowed to mark - trees, fences, whatever and praise him for marking there. Soon you'll learn when he is going to mark - it shows in his behaviour, the way he looks, sniff at a place, turns around. If you can't watch him, keep him in his crate. Clean the place he marked thoroughly.

As soon as he has recovered a bit, and is allowed in public, you might consider dogtrainingclasses, because a dog that knows who is in charge won't mark. It will give him a sense of security that somebody else is in charge, so he won't need to mark.....

Keep up the good work!

Pretty common

and I'm sure he has never been properly house trained. I would get a belly band to discourage him from marking when you can't watch him. You will have to watch him constantly or have him crated when you can't. You also may want to tether him to you as you move about the day. That is the only way to know exactly what he is doing. A dog that has learned to mark is very difficult to teach to stop. It takes alot of dedication, time, patience. Does he leg lift?

yeah

yeah he lifts his leg sometimes. i am hoping you can get bands at petco or something...

he'll be in his crate during the day, which he seems to understand and deal well with. he also seems to know some commands. i just don't want marking to happen when i'm not in the room and not be able to correct it.

He is so cute, even though he has been through hell. poor little guy. Sorry I cant help with the marking, luckily i never had that problem with Rex. I did have it with a female cat many years ago....NOT FUN.
