limping

Hello All Bulldog lovers

Can anyone advise?  I have a male bulldog just over 5 months old who has started limping quite badly.  It is his front right foot/leg that he is having problems with.  I took him to local vet tonight who has given him some painkillers for 10 days.    He is in good form, too good, as he won't stop running around chasing toys and as I have wood floors he is slipping all over.  Can anyone advise what to do and any info on why he may be limping so badly.

Limping

I had one that jumped off the picnic table and tore her acl..  She was given pain killers and had to be crated for 3 months till it healed.  If not she would have needed surgery.  I would keep him crated for at least the 10 days that he is on the pain meds.  It won't heal if you don't it will only get worse.  Take him out just to pee and poop then back in the crate.  It isn't easy but very necessary.  Her's healed so no surgery was needed.  Not sure if they can tear a ligament in the front.  Good luck with your boy but try really hard to crate him.  It will probably hurt you more than him.  LOL

What are you feeding him?

Sometimes food with too high of a protein percentage can cause pano, too rapid growth, and that can cause pain and limping.  Try to keep him quiet as hard as that might be.

He's at the age

To show signs of panosteitis - growing pains. It affects the front legs more often, but can affect the back. It's also called 'wandering lameness' because it can move from one leg to another.

Most dogs will self limit because it can be painful. Be very careful with the pain killers as he can injure himself worse since the pain is being masked.

I would try to give him more crate time and walk on leash, only. Also, don't let him up on furniture.

Good luck!

Did the vet take xrays? The

Did the vet take xrays? The specialist that I use turn every stone.  Make sure you are using a vet who specializes in Bulldogs, you will see it will be worth the drive. I just took Joker my 1 yr. old bulldog for a 4th opinion. Good luck. The quicker you catch something the better for the pup. Keep us posted.

Many thanks

Thank you all for your helpful advice.  Kwasi is in his cage (not very happy about it as he really prefers the sofa) and enduring 'enforced rest'.  If, after a few days I see no improvement I shall take him to a more specialised vet for Xrays etc..Promise to keep everyone posted.

My breeder told us to crate for a month straight.

Only let out to do their business and a limp will heal on its own.  We've done this once and it worked.  Gave fatboy cabin fever though.

Limping much better

Hello Fatboy.  The limping is much better and I am still restricting his movements and will certainly be very careful in the future.  Love Fatboy - I have the impression it is my Kwasi with opposite side markings.  Hard to see the rest of him but the face and the one white front paw are the same - extra-oridinary.
