Laura

I just got back, and didn't want my replies to you to get lost either. I did post a few, but I just saw the Stella is pregnant post.

I fully understand why you feared to write that. There is a LOT of judgement flying around about breeding dogs, and who feels whom is qualified to do so. Heck there are some who think that ANY deliberate dog breeding is wrong! ( wrote about that in my dog vs wolf post). It seems to me like there are many people stuck in the 'extremes' rut. They feel like THEY are 100% correct, and therefore no one else who isn't in their rut could also be right. So they are wrong. If you get nothing else from me I hope I get the message across that all-one-way and no-other-way-is-acceptable thinking makes me CRAZY!

There are so many interpretations of back yard breeders, and what EXACTLY qualifies as 'bettering' the breed. For example, some people think that the fact that bulldogs can not have puppies without a c-section is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, that THAT would be a real, valid, 'bettering' of the breed.

Some think that the people that make up the AKC are the ONLY legitimate group of dog fanciers. Period. Some think that the only dogs deserving to be bred are AKC recognized breeds.

You are absolutely right that show breeders are not automatically superior and deserving to breed dogs over someone that does not show them. There are some who overlook health issues for physical conformation, and some who don't view their dogs as family members, they are just commodities and a way to make their kennel name known. Is this right? Wrong? Who is qualified to make that decision?

I don't feel anyone has a right to pass judgement on others, especially without having any, or very little, facts about that person and what they stand for and how they conduct themselves.

I certainly will not judge you for breeding your dog. Would I breed mine? No, I would not. I feel like showing a dog first is an important step towards making sure that the dog is a peer recoginzed good example of the breed. But I also know that there are more ways than showing to do that, and that showing is not a perfect institution.

And that *I* do not hold exclusive rights to the one and only way to do things. :-)

I hope your girl handles this pregnancy and delivery well, and that you get your chance to show like you want to. I can see that learning to walk again would be kind of important.

I can't wait to see puppies!

Hi Cathy

Thanks for not judging me for breeding.  Like you said, everyone has their own opinions who's to say who's right or wrong? I mean I think there are clear wrongs... such as hoarders and things of that nature... but I think everyone would agree with that (except the hoarders of course). But yes, there are good show breeders, but that doesn't mean all show breeders are good. And yes, there are bad "back yard breeders" who just throw dogs together and put no effort forth as far as making sure the dogs are healthy, well fed and the pups go to good homes. And like you said there are people who think only AKC dogs should be bred, and then those who think its okay to breed mix-breeds... then even some who say it's not okay to breed any. Someone will always think you are wrong no matter what you do... But I wanted people to now, I have good intentions, I don't take her pregnancy or the litter lightly and want what's best for them... but for those whom it matters too, I plan to show a pup from the litter also.

I'm glad that you aren't a one-way only type of person. I started sensing that already though :)

Thanks!

Laura
