Seriously, will this summer just end allready?? Our other dog, (mutt) Tony has kennel cough. Woke up with it early this AM. This is very wierd because he has not gone anywhere lately (what with little brothers' eye surgery and everything else going on...) The vet mentioned that James may have brought it home, and although James is not sick, he could carry it.
On a side note, in the 7 years we have owned Tony he has been to the vet twice (other than routine appmnts). Once for a rash from buying shampoo at the dollar store, and today for hackingup his lungs.
James was vaccinated for kennel cough on 4/16. He will get a booster on Sat. I am so tired of vets and emergency medical stuff that I do not want to go in before then, (James vet is far away, Tony's is nearby) Am i treating this too lightly? I mean, realisticly, James has been exposed to it allready. Any advice would be great!

Kennel Cough....
I believe Kennel Cough is a "dog cold" (just like we get a cold)....caused by a virus, and self-limiting MOST of the time. You must be attentive, listening to make sure there is no problem breathing -- and run the vaporizer, if necessary. Watch for fever and difficulty breathing because unfortunately pneumonia can result, and I think that's caused by the dog aspirating when coughing up the phlegm or when they're vomiting that foamy/clear liquid that sometimes accompanies Kennel Cough---then the antibiotics are needed quickly. I believe cough suppressant is NOT recommended (though I have used guaifenesin tablets). I don't give Kennel Cough vaccine anymore since it doesn't protect against many strains of kennel cough. Other dogs can bring it home without developing symptoms themselves. If you have any serious concerns, take him to the vet--you know best. Even when we do the best we can by feeding them right and giving supplements to maintin strong immune system, these viruses get to them sometimes. Good luck.
Here's the thing...
From my understanding, the vaccine does not prevent you from getting kennel cough. It just lessens the symptoms. And, Micki is right - just like the flu shot for people, the vaccine doesn't cover all strains of the kennel cough.
Kennel cough is more of a concern with young dogs (pups) or senior citizens - dogs with weaker immune systems. If you have a healthy bullie, it shouldn't be a major issue. BUT, you should always watch for progression of any upper respiratory illness to something more serious (like pneumonia).
I thought that the frequency of the intranasal was 6 months? The shot is supposed to provide coverage for a year? Maybe they've changed the preparation?

Yep - well stated
and it doesn't cover all strains. I had dogs get real sick about 3 years ago and they all were up-to-date on their bordatella. Unforunately it was a different strain that Ester must have picked up at a dog show or the vets and they all got sick. 24 hours of puking and temps which went through the gang for a total of 5 days and alot of blanket washing. I was up all night with each one of them. Poor kids.
I hope James doesn't get sick.
thanks guys..
there is a SLIM chance James was covered by the shot, but you're right, it is a pretty weak preventative. we are just gearing up for yet another illness in the house....

Kennel Cough
Like all the others said, keep a close eye for more serious effects. Please be mindful and keep your dog quaranteened from other dogs for at least 2 weeks. The virus is extremely contagious!
in house i'm afraid its too late
i've ben trying to seperate them, washed evereything, etc., but its too late. they have been sharing food, water, toys and playing. doc said the vaccine should protect him, but we'll see.
