Just had a weird and scary situation with Oliver

I heard the familiar sounds of a dog throwing up and went and checked and Oliver was in the middle of throwing up the yellow bile from his stomach, but there was nothing else in it. As soon as he was done heaving, he fell over on his side and immediately got back up. He cleared his throat a few more times with nothing else coming back up and now he is perfectly fine. Any ideas as to why he fell over on his side like that?

Vomit Drop

Be very careful with this. The reason he fell over is he was close to passing out from loss of oxygen.  If it happens again you may need to put a couple of fingers down his throat to clear his airway and try to get him to throwup the bile.  Watch for aspiration.  He should be checked for elongated soft.

Holy Crap!

Is this a normal thing for bully's? throwing up bile? Mine used to do it but hasn't in a long time. That would have freaked me out..... I read somewhere that you should spray lemon water in they're mouth???? Has anyone else heard anything like that?

Thanks Deb

Your responses always give good information. He never actually lost conciousness though, and so far no more vomiting and he's acting perfectly normal. They do have to go back to their vets in a couple of weeks for another weigh in for heartworm meds and I will ask my vet to check his palate.

Kim -- Since he is still a puppy

it is unlikely that your vet will not be able to tell much.  The only real way to tell if a palate is long is to put them out so they can look in the back of the mouth and down the throat. When he gets older....9 months - 1 year then if his palate is bad you should be able to tell by his breathing.  I think most vets like to do surgery around 1 year, unless it is so bad that it is life threatening.  So if you get him neutered that is a good time to check his palate and do the surgery.

He may never do it again and will be fine.  If he did this in the morning before breakfast you might want to make sure he gets a late night treat right before bed so his tummy isn't to empty in the morning.  Sometimes an empty tummy causes an upset tummy and bile, especially if it was a little yellow.

I have never seen one lose conciousness either, but I have always opened up the mouth and airway.

It is scary :(

It is scary...

Newman did it when we first got him.  Started off on a walk, he started heaving and then fell over on the street.  I put fingers down his throat to clear the stuff out, and he popped back up.  You could probably use lemon, but by the time you get it and squirt it, it's a lot faster to just do the finger thing.  Once they throw up, they seem to be fine.

Teeth Clinch

Foam can build up and it is usually if they don't have enough room down their throat.  Is it typical? ... well it can be a symptom of a bad palate.  A squirt of lemon juice breaks up the foamy bile.  It could also be a puppy scared to vomit.  They can sometimes clinch their teeth and hold the bile so you need to open their mouth so the bile comes out...not back down the throat.  They can grow out of it, but the palate should be checked.
