Thanks everyone for your advice about James' ulcer. We went back to the Vet yesterday and it had not improved. I imagine its because we were not very effective about getting the meds in. So last night we got 3 good doses in and this morning we got one.
Now, in the meantime, my daughter has come down with viral conjunctivitis, which I heard is transmitablebetween humans and dogs.
This morning all he wants to do is sleep, his eye looks awful and cloudy. My husband said there was yellow goop this morning and he has a lot of tears today. Is this from the treatment? Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated! Our Vet is in surgery and I am so anxious...and dreading another $100 trip down there
Thanks so much

Dont worry my bulldog has an
Dont worry my bulldog has an ulcer right now and hes tearing and theres yellow guber in his eyes every day. Hes going for Entropion surgery this week becasue his eyelashes are rubbing on his eye causing the ulcer and tearing. We had problems giving him his antibiotics, he would just spit it out but then we put peanut butter on them and now he eats them right up. I dunno I could be wrong but it sounds 100% like what our dog is going through. Good luck =]
thanks..
The doctor thinks something just got in his eye, and that it is not a eyelid related surgery. How do you know if the lashes are causing it?

The eye lids
roll inward causing the hair to rub the eye. He should also be checked for distichia (this is where the eye lashes grow on the inside of the lid. I would suspect the vet has checked to make sure it isn't entropian or distichia. They only way his eye will get better is if you get the meds into his eye. Your vet could also suture his eye lids closed. You might discuss this option with him. If the ulcer doesn't get healed he will go blind in that eye and possibly have to have the eye removed. Eyes are definitely something you should be very concerned about. They can get infected and damaged beyond repair very quickly.
Did the vet stain his eye? What eye meds did the vet prescribe?
i wish i knew
is this something he just needs surgically fixed? or just an abrasion-- can the vet tell? yes, the vet did the stain and the drops are gentamicin sulfate. we go back 2moro and hopefully there will be some progress. he is finally submitting to the drops. the trick for him was putting him up on the counter, much like a vets table.

Glad you are getting drops in
The vet can tell if the ulcer heals...that is why they restain every week to determine the progress of the healing. No surgery should be necessary if it is an ulcer from being poked in the eye with something like a stick or scratching his eye. If the cause is entropian or distichia then surgery will likely be necessary. The vet should be able to determine if surgery will be necessary...but if this vet does not see alot of bulldogs then you might want to seek out one that has bulldog experience and have a consultation.
Right now the eye just needs to heal.
Sometimes counters do work because the height is a bit intimidating. I always use my grooming table for toe nails. When the vet stained his eye did he show you the ulcer? They should have turned off the lights and it will show up with the green stain. I wonder why he perscribed Gentimicin instead of Neo Poly Bac drops. That is what I have always had perscribed by numerous vets for eye ulcers.
THANK YOU..I am going to ask
if maybe there is a more effective treatment, (Ill try Neo Ploy Bac). I have heard a couple people complain that they went thru several meds before they got the right one. I did see the ulcer-- it is below under the bottom lid-- imagine if the eye ball was a clock, it would be between the 5 and 7 oclock. is this where the eyelid iunjury would occur? Thanks for your help-- its nice walking into the vet with some information.

Ofloxacin
My old vet prescribed the NeoPolBac ontiment for many years. We are seeing a opthamologist now who prescribes Ofloxacin. It is drops which is easier to dispense that the ointment IMO. We've also used the Genxxxx(?) from other vets. Nothing against a regualr vet, but I would go to an opthamologist if you have one nearby. The appointments cost the same and they are specialists. With bulldogs eye issues, I feel better having a specialist at my beck and call. She even prescribes meds w/o me bringing the dog in.
he prescribed betadine alternating with the gentamiacin????
have any of you heard of that? we give betadine 2-3 times a day, alternating with the gentamiacin 2-3 times

I don't get the Betadine
I would find a new vet or like the previous poster go to an opthamologist. I can not find anywhere doing a Google search that betadine is used in the eye.
My vet is very experienced so I don't find a need to go to an eye sepcialist and I know if it was an injury beyond his expertise he wouldn't hesitate to refer me.
i know, i am kind of freaking out
there is only one vet on island that specializes in bulldogs (2-- father and son practice) the sire and dam of our puppy both go to him. but betadine in the eye sounds wrong and i cannot find it anywhere online either. i am going to call our other vet, who treats our older dog and see what he says...thanks so much for helping. i'll let you know what i hear...
