Hello all, I need some advice!
Gunther all of a sudden will not sleep through the night. It is not 1:30am on a work night and I am trying to sit with him until he falls asleep..and he just sat with me and chewed on a toy. It is very unusual for him. The clocks changed last week. Could it be that? He's getting a walk at night and bathroom before bed. He lays down for 30 mins and sleeps off the bat, then gets up and walks around and growls at my bed.
I have NO idea what to do! I want to put his bed outside the door and close the door, but I just don't have the heart.
help! I need sleep!
PS. He is three!

He wants to sleep WITH you:-)
That growling at the bed is what Sophia does when she wants up. Works every time!!! Come on, let that baby up there with you!
If not, then I would put him outside of your room. Maybe he could be crated inside your room to stop the roaming around. Something could have frightened him that made him want your attention at night. You just never know. Have you checked with your vet for suggestions?

Agree with Amy --- BUT
unless you want him to sleep with you the rest of his life...DON'T let him up and put his bed in another room. Once he learns that you decide on if he gets to sleep with you then you can allow him the priviledge. There are times that mine don't sleep with me...but I decide it. Like now Ester is in season and I don't want her on the bed so she sleeps in her crate. They need to learn to be asked to sleep with you...not demand to sleep with you.
That is the reason I teach all my puppies to sleep in another room. Kohl sleeps in his ex-pen outside of the bedroom and Ester and MacKenzie sleep with me, unless I decide differently.
Best of Luck! Don't give in and you'll eventually get some rest :).
I've experienced this
Chumlee does not sleep on the bed with me. He will never, no way, I've heard too many horror stories about injuries and bulldog approval peeing. He sleeps on the floor next to the bed. When he first started getting restless I would wake up to him tossing and turning and renesting and body slamming the bed in the middle of the night like your boy. He had a cushion bed that was just a stuffing filled thing. With some suggestions from other members he now sleeps with an osoclating fan on low approx 10 ft away from him so its just a nice calm breeze, yes even in the colder months and the hum of it blocks the other noises out during the night. He also sleeps on a convoluted foam mattress topper "redneck orthopedic bed" folded in three with a nice breathable blanket on top of it also suggested by another member much cheaper than one from a pet store. He also has small pillow (actually a stuffed animal with no button eyes or nose just embroidery) for his head or legs or what ever way he decides to sleep on it, sometimes he uses it to put his chin on sometimes he rests his head on the side and sometimes he kicks it off his bed. He does also have a nylabone in there if he happens to wake up before me he will keep himself busy for a little while because he doesn't like to wake up right away and walk down three flights of stairs to go potty.
Since the clocks changed he has been waking up earlier with the rest of the crew and they have been wrestling at 4 am in the bedroom when they shouldn't be getting up till 5:15am soon they will adjust. It has been a pain in the tail :( It will be over soon, I just feel bad for the lady that lives below me lol it's like WWE.
Skasqueeeeeeakaaay!!

Routine
I had the most success with sticking with the routine that you most would like to go with. With my foster dog, his bedtime frustration is getting better as he learns I'm not going to come in and out of the room just because he's decided he wants to bang on the doors of the crate. He's pretty much sleeping in the other room at an appropriate bedtime and gets up when I get up. They think that he is less than 2 years old, so consistency is working with him. I am not sure what would work with you.
Matilda, alternatively, is almost 7 and can be trusted to do as she pleases, mostly, in the house. I've thought about inviting her up to sleep with me but she does seem perfectly comfortable in her own bed next to mine. We had reinforced her sleeping there early on when she was adopted, and now she's fine with it.
Plus we take naps on the couch together :) I dunno if I'd want her in bed with me because she's a kicker in her sleep. LOL
There is also the point made about the type of nighttime bed. Matilda does fuss with her pillows and blankets before laying down in her upstairs bed (which is why I'm thinking of getting her a Perla and putting a firmer pad in the bottom and a blanket for her to stick her face in, which she likes...
But the downstairs bed she hangs out on during the day is much firmer (it is an IKEA memory foam mattress divided in thirds and covered with a microfiber cover) and she doesn't try to rearrange it. So it could be a comfort thing.
Thank you! I slept last night!
Well last night I slept all night. He was pretty good. I think you are all right about waiting it out. We took him for a long good walk at 7, instead of 6, and he walked harder than normal (and enjoyed it). He left me alone most of the night until 6:15am amd I'll take it!
My husband was unemplpyed for a year. He has been working for about 5 weeks. I think it's been an adjustment for Gunther. But about the last 2 weeks, my husband leaves him on the bed in the morning and when we come home he's on the couch. So I think it is the bed, but it's weird he started not sleeping a week after the bed mornings.
Anyway, I hope more exercise and back to routine will help him!
Sounds like we need to get him a softer bed. He currently sleeps on many comforters and blankets beside my bed....
