Ok, the GSD that I rescued yesterday has bad flea dermatitis going on. Though she is flea free now, her skin and coat are a disaster and she is biting and itching constantly. I have her on Benedryl, 2 25mg tablets. She weighs 86 pounds. Is there anything I can put on her topically that will stop the itching? I wonder specifically about Calm Coat...would this help her?
Thanks in advance!

you can try
calamine lotion for posion ivy....that may help with itching...avon skin so soft helps also....reg tea bags soaked in water will help....those are just a few...witch hazel will work also to stop the itching...those are a few of the ones i know about that are not expensive
Will they work on really dry skin as well?
This poor girl has a lot going on. She has very dry, brittle hair and skin from the long term flea infestation and her allergies to them. I will see if I can maybe try one of these suggestions and if it will help her out.

if the skin is dry
dont go with the witch hazel...you need to add moisture to the skin....go with the calamin lotion...or skin so soft.....even baby oil will work...she is digging at herself becasue the skin is dry and itches...baby oil will soak in and make it soft....remember how our skin itches during the winter same thing.....and if she licks the baby oil i will be ok....pour in on as needed
Thanks Judy, I will get some baby oil.
She DOES need to have that skin softened up so hopefully hair can regrow. I bought some of that Calm Coat, it is Eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree oil, and something else...I sprayed her as soon as I got home and she quit itching almost right away. I will see how that does, but need to have other things on hand for those middle of the night times when she just can't get comfy.

I just looked this up
found that oatmeal baths help. Also a good dandruff shampoo medicated
Olive oil in food about 1 teaspoon a day with food. Also Zinc I used 10 mg for Rocky.
Also a 50/50 rinse with apple cider vinegar they say helps.
I feel so bad for her.

I got the Oatmeal bath Naturals shampoo for her.
I will see if she is still feeling so itchy and if so, I'll give her a bath with it. I just put a tube of Advantage on her yesterday and would like that to absorb before I bath her...hope it won't be necessary to wash her tonight! If so, oh well, I'll just go on and buy another tube of Advantage:-)
I also got her Salmon Oil pills, 1000 mg each. That should help her out:-)
Thanks SO much for your help:-)

I just wanted to say since
I just wanted to say since you mentioned shampoo that Matilda gets bathed in Nizoral 1% (people's dandruff shampoo, contains ketoconazole) and it really, really helps. Apparently, dogs can be put on oral ketoconazole as well as an antifungal which is another route the vet would like to investigate come liver-panel bloodwork time...
The shampoo is not overly foamy (it doesn't contain as much irritating soap) and if you leave it on long enough the foaming action dissipates. It does not strip their skin and her fur is beautiful, soft and shiny after a bath with it.
If you live outside the US or have access to someone who could get it for you, Nizoral comes in 2% and I'm sure that works even better.
