Hi I came here for help. I have a schipperke (not a bull dog) with a really deep pocket area and up there is her little stub of a tail. It is almost two inches deep. This has become a chronic infection site. Go 5 days without antibiotics and Annie is all swollen it seems overnight. She is now on another round of antibiotics. Last fall I took her to the groomer. I was told she had an infected tail area and that my vet looked at it. The groomer told me to give her shallow cool baths. By the next night at 2 AM the dog was on fire. I rushed her to the emergency vet clinic and her temp was over 104. I was told that the creams, antibiotics and solutions would do the trick. Two days later I took her back to the vet who was going to operate on her immediately (or in another day). I couldn't bring myself to do this with this raging infection so off to another vet clinic. It took three months and three different antibiotics to stop this infection. During the winter months Annie was fine but since the onset of this hot spring and summer, the infection has returned. I clean the area twice a day. First round of antibiotics and the draining was going away and I thought we were on the mend but 5 days off the antibiotics and it seemed like just another day and her back area was swollen and hard and draining again. Now the vet and I have talked surgery but we thought we could get this under control. Maybe I can keep it under control but not in the hot weather. Annie is also never been this old nor this fat. I am trying to control her eating with a raw carrot and green beans simmered in fat free chicken broth. I am more diligent now not knowing the extent and (what's wrong with me???) The dog can't be on antibiotics forever without nothing helping. Now we are trying the antibiotics, babywipes, the solution, the peroxide, the cream, and the diet. I emailed the vet in Woodstock. Thank you for the advice. Have any of you had surgery or not? How do you keep on top of the infection? I am emotional over Annie; she is the sweetness in my life. I have another schip with no problems and have had several others never with this problem. I looked to the bull dog sites for help because of hearing that some have the same issues. None of my schip contacts have even heard of this nor have this issue. Thank you.
Sounds like its time to remove the tail
she has got to be in a lot of pain. It will make a world of difference in the quality of her life.
Good luck

I agree with Lynn -HUGE quality of life difference (Graphic Pix)
We had similar issues with Gizmo, and we had to have her tail amputated - she has been a totally different lady, ALOT happier, and ALOT more comfortable :)
Keep in mind, it IS a Major surgery with its risks -
I wasnt prepared to see her post op - so you know what to expect, I'll include her post op photo - Its not ment to scare, but to prepare you.

inverted tail part two
Annie, the schipperke's tail doesn't show. It is two inches inside this pocket. It is the pocket that gets infected.
yes, Gizmo's was an inverted corkscrew -
we could go in atleast 2-3 inches inside her pocket to try to keep it clean and dry :(
