I've had Doyle, now 8 years old, to the vet 3 times recently for interdigital cysts. I've had antibiotic's prescribed and they seem to help while he's taking them but the cysts inevitably come back.
Is it possible it's a food allergy, and maybe I should switch food?
I've been feeding Natures Domain, a Costco product that looks to have the same formula as Taste of The Wild.
I'm trying to remember if the problem started after I switched to this food, but don't really know.
Can a food allergy cause the cysts? The cysts can get big and drain etc. I feel bad for my boy.
Thanks
How long has he been eating this food?
It's very possible that it's food related. Try switching back to whatever food he was eating prior to getting IDC's
Good luck

I'm trying to remember...
...if there is a relationship bewteen when I switched food and the IDC's. I'm going to switch back to Orijen. He did well on it but had loose stools. I think I will do the senior formula and see how that works.
Thanks Lynn.
I hope its just that simple
good luck.
Give that boy a hug from me.

Try Acana, same as Orijen but
Try Acana, same as Orijen but lower on Protein. Boozer is doing great on the Pacifica. It might be food related issue, Boozer used to get these all the time.
IDC's
My boy, Buster, developed IDC's 3 years ago at age 18 mos. This was our first experience with this issue, and first vet said we were just lucky all the past years. We had just tried a different food, so I thought that was the cause, but turned out not to be--not to say that can't be the reason with yours. Unfortunately, he developed one persistent, chronic one--huge and ugly and very painful. It affected his gait, attitude and appetite--lost a good amount of weight. We tried all the home remedies first (preparation H, bleach soaks, epsom salt soaks, kosher salt soaks, animax) and many treatments with 3 different vets...different combinations of antibiotics and homeopathic supplements, he even had 3 surgical procedures. The Bulldog vet does not know what causes them, but suspects ingrown hairs, because he has cleaned them out when he did the procedures--that I witnessed. The best thing we finally came up with was a long course of Cephalexin and Ketoconazle, while I continued to apply Fluocinonide .5% cream. He's doing well now, though he still continues to get one here and there--I just apply the cream. Recently I got a suggestion to wash his feet twice a week with Soft Scrub with bleach (who would have thought!!--and this was from the Bulldog Vet!!)--so far so good. Being older, I expect and hope your boy's IDC won't become chronic and will respond quickly to whichever treatment you try. Good luck!
re:IDC's
Cephalexin was one of the antibiotics that he was on for 2 weeks. It helped while he was on it, but when the prescription was over they came back like before.
I'll try the Soft Scrub foot wash, who knows, maybe it will help.
Thanks!
our experience w/ IDCs
Winston develops them seasonally and they are almost completely allergy related. Have you noticed if they are cyclical or just randomly (regardless of snow on the ground or pollen in full bloom)? At first I thought Winston's might be food related, but when I really "tracked" their appearance and frequency it became apparent that the food wasn't the primary cause.
Unfortunately there isn't a way (that I've found) to prevent them entirely. We do our best to minimize them by washing his feet a couple times a day during the height of allergy season, he take an off-brand claritin daily, and when we do notice one beginning to crop up we do the epsom salt soak. If we miss the signs that one is cropping up we have a prescribed medicated ointment from the vet to apply to the cyst to help ptry to kill the bacteria growth and prevent it from progressing to a full blown infection. (Been through that once and it was NOT fun).
Good luck, I hope you can find relief for your sweet boy.
Shannon and Winston :)
My swimming bully buddy!
One of my Bullies has two
One of my Bullies has two right now - one of them all most went away but another has creeped up which is much bigger. What is the name of the prescribed medicated ointment from the vet? I have two ointments from other vet visit and want to make sure I don't already have it. I am already giving her Keflex 500mg 2x a day for other skin issue.
Thanks
