HI everyone,
I'm working my way into the cooked diet. So far Gemma loves it!! I first used 1 lb of chicken breast, then fresh green beans, and then brown rice. I'd say 2/3 chicken and the rest veg and rice. I know I need to get some of those pet tabs but in the mean time what else can I use? I don't have access to a lot of vitamins. If I add crushed egg shell how much do I need to use? Also, if I add sardines for the fish oil do I just cut them up with everything else??
Simple questions but it is all so confusing!! I just want to do the right thing for my girl!! The good news is she LOVED it!!!
I was giving her 3 cups per day of the Royal Canine Hypoallergiac. She is just over one year and 59 lbs. She seemed to still be hungry after 3 cups of the cooked. Is 4 cups per day of this mix too much? I don't want her getting any bigger.
THANKS!!
raw diet....
you feed 2 to 3 % of adult weight...so wilson is 56 lbs and gets between 1 to 1 1/2 lb a day....i use one egg shell...
what are you doing with the chicken...boiling or raw....what veggies and why....dogs dont really process greens..but they fun to give...
i would lessen the rice each time..and add in more fresh meat
remember its 80% meat 10% bone and 10% organs
are you adding in liver..or tripe to the meal....i would also find beef hearts....to start adding....
I'm new to this so why i'm
I'm new to this so why i'm doing some things I may not know!!! I'm boiling Chicken breast, I have been using carrots and green beans, and brown rice. I haven't really figured out an exact recipe but i'm trying to keep it to 2/3 meat the rest rice and veggies. No, at this time i'm not doing any raw. I live in China so I question the raw meat here. It is probably ok but I don't want to risk her getting sick from something. So 1 egg shell in the whole mixture?
I'm also ordering some of the pet tabs to add to the mix.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
lisa
are you cooking the veggies?
found this GREAT! article on cooked diets!
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/cooked-diet/
I really dont' know much about cooked diets, but this article makes it so easy!
It gives the recommended amount of crushed egg shell.
The sardines can be added any way you like! All by themselves, cooked in with the chicken, or if they are canned added in with the chicken. (Audrey LOVES sardines so much!)
I honestly don't think she needs the rice at all. Dogs have such a short digestive tract the grains don't have time to ferment like they do in an herbivore/omnivore. I don't think they add anything at all that is necessary. The meat and veggies should be enough to provide all the nutrients she needs, and will be the easiest to digest. The egg shells will provide the calcium, the veggies will provide roughage/fiber since she is not eating raw bone.
Make sure to add some liver. And don't cook too much.
My holistic vet recommends giving a large variety of cooked meat and veggies. (I don't-Audrey has too many problems with cooked or non-meat food). She says all the squashes and summer veggies, green beans and peas...cooking does help break down plant cell walls so they can get the nutrients out of them. A variety of meat so they can get all the amino acids. The only protein source that has ALL the amino acids is eggs-so by offering at least 4 different varieties of ANIMAL protein you will make sure she gets those amino acids.
Make it fun for both of you! (A very WISE lady made me realize the importance of this -Thanks Judy;-)
Really the most important thing to do is offer a variety of different protein sources and make sure to cook them lightly so you don't destroy the amino acid chains. So simple! The article says optimally 75% meat and the rest veggies. Grain is not necessary and has been linked to many health problems. If your girl has been having issues, I would HIGHLY recommend skipping the grains.
Please keep us informed on how she does!

Thanks SO much, this should
Thanks SO much, this should be all I need to get going. She just seems more hungry with this, I hope she is getting enough. If I add the sardines and egg shell do you think I still need the pet tab? At this point I'm not giving her any other vitamins..I probably should be
what a great article!
Thank you for sharing it!! I hope it helps Gemma, I know I found it really interesting and informative. You and Judy are beginning to convince me to convert from kibble.
Unrelated to this thread, did you ever manage to find the items to you needed to make Audrey her fashionable, home-made, harness?? If so, pictures please! :)
Shannon and Winston :)
My swimming bully buddy!
I strongly recommend kibble conversion!
It is not nearly as scary as most think it is.
And you are not as stupid as the dog food manufacturers try to convince you you are. It actually does NOT take some form of higher intelligence to figure out how to properly feed a dog.....
I did FINALLY get my HTFX cooling packs. Last week. They were apparently in high demand. I have all the harness/vest making materials, now that it is cooler and I don't have to worry as much about her overheating. Oh well, gives me time to work on it. I have a family wedding that I have a lot of sewing/fixing things to work on for, so I couldn't work on her vest anyways right now.

Thanks again for all that
Thanks again for all that info!
I have figured out that rice seems to be an issue so I have switched to sweet potatoes or yams..can't tell which they are!! I just boil chicken, green beans, carrots and sweet potatoe and add a can of sardines after it is all cooked. She LOVES it!! She was a little on the chubby side (59 lbs) and now since I started this she is down to 53 so that is good..either that or she is starving!!!
He skin and tear stains seem better than ever before. She is still itching a little and licking her feet but many it is something in the air. I talked to my breeder and he said at this time of year a lot of his dogs have skin issues too also he said she could grow out of some it this after she is 2.
I need to get some liver and put that in too, today i'm also adding a little ground beef to the mix.
Great to finally feel like I did the right thing for her!! :)
