Just catching up from the weekend and it seems like many of us are having the same skin issues with the scabs and hair falling out. My boys head looks moth eaten. This has been going on with different levels of intensity since March. I had him scraped tested checked and double checked. No mites, no staph, no bacteria. It all comes back clean so my vet is attributing this to allergies. My next step is to get the blood test done to see what is causing this.
He has been on Hydroxizine (antihistamine) twice and Temaril P (steroid) twice. It's been a bandaid and is obviously not fixing the problem.
If this has happened to your dog in the last 7 months, please respond with your experience how your vet treated and if you know what specifically caused the issue. How did you fix it?
Thanks in advance. I know besides myself there are a few others who will also like to read the responses.
My boy is 4 he is on grain free food - I have not changed any cleaning agents or brought anything new into the house (that I can think of) to spur an allergic reaction. I'm guessing its more than likely an outdoor allergen causing the problem but I won't know for sure what it is until I get the testing done.
I have had issues with him in the spring (since he's 4 I know he has a seasonal allergy March-April) but it has never EVER gone on for this long.
P.S. One more thing.
at first they checked for ringworm because the circles of missing hair looked like that. But its not ringworm either.
Oh yes!
I am going through the same thing, again! This is a constant battle around here, and this year is proving to be the worst ever. I am just at wits end. We have tried every AB known to man, I think, and nothing works. I really think our weather has a lot to do with it, and I have read that high humidity will make it worse. Of course, the humidity is always in the upper 80's here, and not too much to do about that.
I have been researching Staphate Lysate injections for chronic skin infections. I am no vet and to try to keep up with the terminology is quite daunting. I am going to call my vet and have him see what he thinks. I guess it is pretty expensive, but at this point, I really don't care what it costs if it will give these dogs some relief from the constant itching and sores. They are just miserable, and I feel so helpless to do anything.
I will positively say, no more bulldogs for me as long as I live in S.E. Texas. That makes me very sad. Pris
I'm in RI Pris
same thing high humidity here now but not since March!
I honestly think something else is going on here - it seems they are all on different foods so I don't think it's a changed ingredient or anything (which was my first thought).
So sorry your babies are going thru it too - it sure does stink to not be able to fix it for them and be done with it. =( Crappy thing for us it he looks better/worse/better/worse but it never fully goes away. Wits end here too. Can't see just handing over more $ for drugs that won't fix it.
It's hot and dry here and I
It's hot and dry here and I have the same with my Bulldog. At the moment we are on antibotics and Hill's ZD and there seems to be less and smaller bummps. Oh we are also using a steroid cream as well on the bumps and baths twice a week. So I don't think it's the climate. Our Vet says this is a really bad year, they can't keep the meds in stock, it seems everyone is itchy. Except Bella, she was after her feet for a couple of days and now nothing, just bumps that appear painful, when I touch them and bald spots. Not a good thing for showing!!
Onslow sorry your are going through this
I hope some one can come up with some help for you.
Jo Ann
Thanks Jo Ann
I just thought it would be good to get some collective information from others dealing with it too - it's so strange!
Skin issues are so distressing
I saw on another board that someone was talking about MARS you might want to pop over and take a look on G's board. I hope I'm not steping out of bounds but this is to important to not share info. Rocky had all sorts of skin allergies. I felt so bad for him. I did everything I could and I would get them under control only to have another one pop up. I was thinking maybe try some vitamin c to boost his immune system. Get better soon buddy.
Jo Ann
Saw that - thx!
It's OK people x-post all the time. Thanks for the heads up I agree its important to share the info. Too bad everyones all over the place now. =(
That's what I thought Kofi had.
But the vet said no.
Defnitely us.
But just on his chin. The current concoction of 200mg Doxycycline and 10mg Prednisone orally a day is, at least 3 days post-vet-visit, doing the trick so far. All the swelling is gone which has made all the pustules clear up. But the doc definitely said that he attributes the swelling, puffy, shiny redness to allergens and our humid muggy weather which is why we're on the Pred to keep the swelling down so the Doxy can do it's work on the infection that grew inside the pustules. boo.
I sure hope your cutie patootie gets to feeling better!
Milton's Mama -- Tinker AFB, OK
Jack battled this for several months, from August to April
I'm still not sure exactly what was causing it, but Jack started with the little scabs and hair falling out. That progressed to hot spots off and on, which we had to treat with antibiotics. He also had round circles of missing hair with the telltale red ring at the border that looked like ringworm, but the vet said it wasn't ringworm. $8 zillion dollars worth of slides/cultures/antibiotics/etc. over a three month period and we still had no definitive answer. He looked terrible...he was missing big patches of hair and had lost about 10 pounds. As a last ditch effort, I changed his food to NB duck and potato (two ingredients that I had never fed him in the past), started giving him only duck and potato treats, and started bathing him twice a week in Microtek shampoo (from the feed store). I also watched his ears, nose fold, etc. like a hawk to make sure there was no yeast making him scratch. I'm happy to say that he is now back to his old, gorgeous self and has gained all of the weight back (plus a few extra!). I'm only bathing him about once a month now and he's still on a strict duck and potato diet. He's always eaten grain-free food, so I don't know what specific ingredient it was that was bothering him--but the vet told me to try a completely new protein/carb combo and it seems to have worked.
Heather, Jack, Rosie, and Thor
I just switched Onslow too
he's on TOTW BIson and Venison which he's also never had before. I'm hoping this will help! Thanks so much for your input on the matter. I appreciate it.
TOTW is what I was feeding him when it got REALLY bad
but I was feeding the Pacific Stream version. I have heard of alot of people having skin issues with the TOTW food. He was originally on Sweet Potato and Venison NB, then we went to the TOTW and it really flared up. I still have Rosie and Loco on the TOTW Pacific Stream and they're doing fine, so I'm not knocking the food at all....just letting you know that it didn't work well for Jack.
Heather, Jack, Rosie, and Thor
I had Onslow on TOTW Pacific last year
he had red itchy feet and started turning his nose up at it. I switched him to Wellness Fish one protein food. Then he got REALLY bad so now back to TOTW Bison and Venison. I know what you mean about foods, it's rough finding one that works. We're still looking after 4 years. (sigh)
Re: food
Mine have been on NB Sweetpotato and Venison for a long time. I haven't noticed any difference by going grain free. They only get grain free treats, and nothing else. If anyone could come up with a definitive answer to this issue, they would make a fortune! Unfortunately, it isn't going to be me..................
Same Problem for Eddie last year
I had the same problem with Eddie last year. He had small bumps here and there especially on the top of his back and shoulders. I too thought it was ringworm because once the scab fell off the hair came out in a perfect circle. We are in Vancouver BC and our weather for humidity is not too often. We had a spell of it last summer. I switched his food to Go Natural Salmon and Oatmeal (novel protein and one carb) his coat now is fantastic, but are now battling the tearstains watery eyes and yeasty nose rope etc. Not sure if I want to change foods yet again as his coat is really nice, but there is something in the food that still isn't right for him. I did go to grain free and it was a disaster for Eddie, hair loss and fly snapping episodes. Theses guys sure keep us quessing.

daisy mommy
Keep us posted on her
I'll be interested to hear what happens to all the dogs experiencing these issues. (((Daisy))))
Sorry to hear about Onslow's skin condition...
Hope you find some relief soon!
Thanks!
=)
I did experience this with Kofi. I would say it started
about the first of the year. My vet called it allergies and said lots of dogs down here were experiencing. She just recommended Malasab (?) shampoo. It never did clear up very well, I used wipes, diluted clorox and cotton balls....it did get better, but went away when I started feeding raw.
I had her on grain free Wellness. I do admit I shared a few kernel of popcorn with her frequently, but never did find the cause. The shampoo dried her coat even tho' I gave her salmon oil in food.
I hope you find a solution for your little guy.
Had this same thing with four
Had this same thing with four of the dogs. I think it's mosquito's or something. Been to the vet's office, they did a sample to grow, but nothing grew. No answers yet!!!! Bendryl, and baths!
I know I've posted this several times already
http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/systemic_yeast_mini_course.htm
but it REALLY sounds like what everyone is talking about. A systemic absolute overload that the body can NOT deal with anymore that shows itself in the skin, the biggest organ of the body.
You all know by now I am a raw feeder, and the single biggest reason I switched is because it did not make sense to me to keep feeding my dog something that was going to cause her body to become overwhelmed with over time. The recommendation to switch kibble frequently to keep the body from reaching the breaking point still makes no sense to me, it is STILL feeding something that is not tolerated that is eventually going to cause my dog's body to be overwhelmed.
The finsihed kibble product is SO FAR REMOVED from what the raw ingredients were it is not possible to say which of those ingredients is causing the intolerance/build up.
Read the article, it really has some great info to help understand the relation between food, digestion, allergies, and overall health.

Why wouldn't the Vets know
Why wouldn't the Vets know about this? I find it a little hard to believe Cancer and Schizophrenia, Lupus, Arthritis or Diabetes
are caused by yeast infections. When someone starts making these kinds of claims I tend to disbelieve. No disrespect of you and your opinions Cathy and Audrey, I have heard lots of good with the raw food diet, but alot of us can't afford that as we have more than one baby.
there are more than one kind of yeast
there are internal kinds that you CAN not see, not like the more obvious stuff you can see, like on their face, or in their ears, or on their feet. And many vets ARE realizing it. The commercial dog food industry is still fairy new in the grand scheme of things, and as a rule there is NOT a lot of long term research done in the veterinary industry at all.
So if your dog is having chronic, long term, baffling skin problems, ANY kind of skin problems, and no one can figure out the root cause of it, there is a chance there is something growing in their intestines that their body is constantly fighting that not only is interfering with nutrient digestion, but overtaxing the immune system so they can not fight off other, simple, usually no big deal things. You certainly have nothing to lose by trying a very simple, no chemical no additive no processes diet to see if it helps.
I have more than one baby too, and when faced with paying for expensive arthritis medication or trying a different diet, I chose the different diet. I honestly was not expecting dramatic results, my old dogs never had ANY skin, allergy, digestive issues. So when a holistic store owner told me the kibble caused arthritis I was VERY skeptical. I was so surprised to see the dramatic improvement! And very pleased!
Diabetes is very much food related, and how many times have we seen cancer linked to food additives, and chemicals? The point is your body is NOT individual parts that all work independantly, it is ONE WHOLE that is dependant on it's individual parts to work properly. Drs, vets, are trained to take an individual piece and fix it, without a whole lot of thought to how that piece affects the whole.
I don't know why people think a raw diet is so expensive they couldn't possibly afford it. It really isn't that expensive.
Cathy and Audrey
I read your article and some of it
would make sense but he is not yeasty at all. He's clean for yeast, mites, and bacteria - I'm still at a loss but thanks for posting.
vets dont know becasue
first they throw pred or an antobotic at any problem thats what their taught....
the skin is the largest covering on the dog or human......when their is a internal problem the body tries to rid the problem by going thru the skin.....this is taught in tcm traditional chinese medicine....
yeast, ear infections, bumps and lumps.....are an internal problem...many times casued by a major organ unable to do its job,,,,,the kidneys unable to rid a toxin....the liver unable to act as a filter....
many times almost 99% is food casued....to many chemicals in the food....many people feel feeding grain free is the way to go....thats good but you must look at all the chemicals that is in the food...thats what dogs have a problm with...the chemicals....
dog food compaines dont have to tell you they changed their formulas....or they that they found a cheaper ingredient to preserve their food with.....
if your a kibble feeder my suggestion is to find three foods and rotate them as much as possible......
your boy may benefit from some mint which is a cleanser.....brew him a little....their are other herbs that will help clean his system and help his kidneys and liver function better.....
Thanks for your input Judy
If I gave the mint - how exactly do you make it - like tea? and how much? Thank you!
i use fresh
mint...its so easy to grow its almost like a weed...i make it like a tea...my guys like it both warm and cold....
do these bumps appear at nite...during the day...or are they their at all times???
is onslow a am or pm dog which is he more active....does he seek sunshine or shade.... i can give you some more herbs by answering some of these questions.....
does he tend to be heavy or thin......would you consider him slow and easy going or fast always in a hurry...does he share his toys .....
I have tons of fresh mint! =)
The red scaly spots on his skin - they come and go. I haven't noticed it being day or night, I'll notice them - they are there for a few days then they are gone - they make him itchy. They have been either on his belly, shoulders or head very sporatic. The moth eaten fur on the top of his head is constant and doesn't seem to bother him at all.
He is much more active in the evening and lately when I take him outside he's been plopping down in the HOT sunshine - it's been sweltering here at 80-100 degrees. So I pretty much try to get him right up. He's a stinker though and likes to roll on his back and smile at me when I say we need to go in. Grass allergy crossed my mind because he also likes to eat GRASS which I try to avoid letting him do if at all possible.
He's not skinny or overly fat either. If I had to lean one way I say he's on the heavy side. He's pretty slow and easy going but he will often will have quick bursts and start running full speed on walks etc.,.
Toys, he's a single guy so he really doesn't have to share with anyone but we can take anything from him if thats what you mean.
Thank you for trying to help me!
ok i will work this up tonight are you
sure the grass has not been treated with anything? does some one spray for weeds by chance???
if not i am looking into some herbs for the boy...by what you have told me....
No not treated
thank you so much Judy. The only herb he is on currently is astragulus for his immune system.
I'll take a close up picture
of the spot he has on his belly tonight.
Neat, I never thought of them
Neat, I never thought of them as nite or day dogs. Bella likes it in the evening, they rough house together then, but they both love to sunbath in the morning before it gets really hot. Bella will use the pool to cool off in but our other won't he just lays in the shade and pants. Luckily we have central air, you need it here, it can reach 100+ in July and August. Do your dogs all get a funny burst of energy and race around for a few minutes and act like fools?? Both have mine have done this since puppies. Cathy I will talk to my Vet about the yeast issues internally, your point is right. I wonder if probiotics would help.
info on astragulus
The side effects of astragulus, for example, include mild gastrointestinal discomfort or allergic reactions. There are also cautions listed against using astragulus during serious illness or if one has ongoing skin disorders. Perhaps the latter is the case because astragulus is a vasodilator which means it encourages blood flow to the skin surface and this may increase inflammation in skin disorders. No information is given as to why astragulus should not be given during acute illness, though it seems to be information passed on from Chinese Traditional Medicine and could be a worthy caution to note.
Nearly everything says it's very safe and no side effects were found, except for that one little bit about skin problems. Maybe Onslow is that rare individual who's skin reacts to it?
Cathy and Audrey
He's been on it for 3 years
and the problems just started this year so I truly don't think it's that. My vet put him on it after he had demodex as a pup. Thank you Cathy also, for trying to help. =)
Sposed to be under astragalus post
I don't know why my posts are getting messed up. =(
Everything I read did say
side effects are very rare.
I hope you figure it out!
