Is this what a hot spot looks like? Took him to the vet they did skin scrapings and could not find anything. They say it is from allergies. Anyone have any feedback for me?

on my dogs. I would highly suspect that is what it is. Did they scrap to make it look that angry and red? Poor guy. While I would suggest brown listerine and gold bond powder ...I'm not sure on this since it is very open and sore. The Listerine would sting.
What did the vet do? Any antibiotics? Any suggestion for an ointment?
I used a tea tree oil on an infected tail a couple of months ago with great success. I can let you know what it was when I get home. I guess tea tree oil is a drying agent and you wnat to dry out a hot spot.
There are others with much more experience with these things then me. But I do know they can get huge very fast.

My vet prescribed Prednisone and Cephalexin. He aslo said to apply Neosporin on the hot spot. That picture was after the wound was shaved and cleaned, it looked a lot worse before that.
My Vet thinks it is a allergy to something. I have tried different foods, the current one being Taste of the Wild Salmon and Rice. The last food Alvin was on was Natural balance Duck and Potatoe. Really di not see much of a difference in his coat just in his stools.

It was recommended to me last year when one of my boys had several hot spots break out all at once. I ordered from KV Vet Supply and got it in just a few days. The hot spots stopped oozing and started healing within 24 hours. I've used Listerine in the past, but the Vetericyn worked much faster (and it doesn't smell funny).

hotspots in the past. I wouldn't panic and start changing foods. I agree with the gold bond powder and you can clean it with either the listerine or apple cider vinegar works well for hotspots also.

He has had skin issues since we got him. We have been trying different foods to see if that will help. The hot spots only happened recently. We are considering allergy test for foods and region.
Rocco had a big hotspot just like that on his back...I asked around here about foods and allergies but he was allergic to his food (it wasn't grain free)...I ended up switching him to Natural Balance Grain Free along with wild alaskan salmon oil and did great on it...his coat is so full right now and shiny. It took about two weeks after awitching his food for the hot spot to fill in

By the way Alvin is 5 months old and 33lbs.
Well Hello Alvin :)
Love the name.
I disagree with the neosporin for a hot spot. You want to dry it up and neosporin doesn't do that.
The stuff I used on Kohl's tail was T-Pro Cut and Wound Spray with Tea Tree Oil and is Non-Stinging. http://www.healing-tree.com/Tea-ProPet.html
Vetericyn spray works great!

Helen's remedy was...
clean it with plain brown Listerine and then dust it with Gold Bond medicated powder.

Vetricyn
That is what I was after...but Bothell feed was all out of it so I ended up with the T-Pro.
Thyroid
Have not had his thyroid checked yet. That is done by a blood test right?
yes.......
and if it is his thyroid, the medication is inexpensive.
