Hives right after being neutered?

Tucker was neutered 2 weeks ago this coming Monday and he has had hives since the day after he was neutered. I have been giving him Benadryl but it is not helping at all. He seems pretty itchy and has some red spots on his back and been licking/biting on his feet like crazy and smells kinda yeasty now. He has never had issues with allergies and he is 3 years old. He has been on his current food for a month or 2 now but I don't think his hair has looked as good with this food totw..he was on blue buffalo salmon wilderness which has 34% protein but he was doing good on it and his hair looked really good but I didn't feel the protein was healthy for him but I am about ready to just switch him back to it since he did seem to do a lot better on it. I was wondering if he might have had a reaction to the anesthesia or something to have not had hives until the day after being neutered but I would think that would be out of his system by now and his hives be gone.

What does your vet say?

Maybe he picked up something at the vets when he had the surgery.  Did your vet suggest Benadryl?

The vet has been out of town

The vet has been out of town for over a week so of course I haven't been able to call and ask him. I will call tomorrow and see what he says (that is if he has ever got back from his cruise!). I'm figuring he will need a cortisone shot since his hives are still there and the benadryl isn't touching him.

If he's had hives for that long...

something keeps bothering him.  Have you used any new rug cleaners, detergents, etc?  Any bug sprays or sun screens?  New food maybe or a different diet after the surgery?

Nope nothing new which is

Nope nothing new which is what I am confused about. He has been on his current food for 2 months now and like I said he just broke out in hives the day after being neutered ( 2 weeks ago tomorrow). I had noticed though that after switching his food his hair got dull looking but he never has had a hive on his body until now and they are everywhere!! I think I am going to try switching his food back to what he was eating (even though the protein level wasn't good 34%..the reason for switching)

What kind of TOTW did you switch him to?

It could be the food, we've never had trouble with TOTW, but he could be allergic to something in it.  What is the protein source?  And what is the protein in his old food?

He was eating salmon and is

He was eating salmon and is eating salmon in totw and I didn't think there was much difference in the ingredients from the totw and the blue buffalo. I noticed the blue buffalo had a more fishy smell so maybe it had more fish in it then the totw? I'm just so confused on why he has had the hives for so long without benadryl even helping at all. I would have thought if it would have been the food he would have had hives before now but who knows.

the surgery weakened his immune system

maybe he has had issues with the food but his immunity was handling it, and the surgery weakned it to where he got the hives. I would switch him back to the food he did well on to see if that makes them go away.

Have you given any flea treatments?

We used Frontline on one of our guys a few years ago and he broke out in hives every day for three weeks.
