We took Rufus to the vet for his booster shots and the vet said he has a small umbilical hernia. He stated to me that if we have him neutered he can fix it then. My question is that his hernia is small about the size of a nickel so will it close or stay that size or will it get bigger? I also posted this by mistake in the general forum, I apologize.
I haven't had this issue in a dog, but have heard this....
Small hernia's generally close on their own. One the size of a nickel is not what I would call small though. Others here may have better info for you....hernia repair us simple but care needs to be taken to keep the pup quiet for a couple of weeks to allow it to close and heal up completely I would think

How did the vet diagnose the hernia.
What test do they do or can they feel it.
