I have been feeding Bear raw since about June of this year. Yesterday he started with the runny runs! He will be 5 in Nov and weighs about 54#.
Do I give him pumpkin? Is pumpkin for diarrhea or constipation?
Do I feed him as normal? I give him chicken necks in AM and chicken breasts in PM. My husband told me to feed him his chicken breasts yesterday even though he was runny. He didn't want me to starve him.
Do I give him yogurt with active live cultures?
Do I give him pepto bismol or Immodium?
I don't know what could have caused this. Is this a one time thing with raw? It has already been 4 months and he has done great with it up until now. Maybe it was the added carrots or green beans or the diatmoaceous earth?? Don't know!!!Please help. I want him to be back to normal. It is 2 am central time and I just took him out and stool very very runny, no form, just watery.
Raw feeder here
*for over 15 years. Honestly I never used DE so I can't comment on that. Can you try feeding just chicken necks for the time being? Vegetables might be the cause of the loose stools. More bone should help.

Pumpkin is used both for diarrhea
and constipation.Sounds strange, I know. It always has helped Kofi if she had the runs. I wonder if he has some kind of a parasite. I have been feeding raw since June, and Kofi will maybe get slightly runny if I give her something different or rich. Yesterday for example she had two beef ribs (didn't eat the bone) and since she doesn't get them often her stool was somewhat runny last night.
Slippery elm bark also soothes the digestive tract. I have also given her pepto bismol.
You could try rice and boiled meat for a day or two to see if that does the trick.
Yet if this came on suddenly with no diet change, I would be inclined to take a stool sample to the vet.
Keep us informed. I hope this helps, I hate it when Kofi has problems like that.
I used DiaBac for the first time...
a couple of weeks ago and it worked wonders, Newman had hard stool after 12 hours. You have to order it online, but maybe for the future to keep it on hand.
Audrey recently had a bout of diarrhea
she is raw fed. It was BAD, like in the house several times bad, smelled awful too. I gave her pumpkin and it worked very fast. I fed her more bone for a few meals, and she was fine in a day. I would eliminate the veggies for a bit to see if that helps.

meant to say also
It's hard to say what caused it, I would tend to think it's more of an occasional DOG thing vs caused by their food. It is not at all uncommon for dogs to get a random bout of diarrhea, no matter what food they are eating. If it's frequent though, you'll have to look at causes.

I fed Bear this morning...
More bones, 2 Pepto Bismol tablets and 1 tablespoon pumpkin. Is 1 tablespoon pumpkin enough? He was still having bouts of diarrhea by lunch time and is peeing alot.
Should I do something more? Should I give him some yogurt with live cultures? Thanks! I just want him to feel better.
Audrey got 1/4 cup pumpkin
at a time. I gave her some every couple hours, if she had diarrhea again. Then again in the am, just to be sure. I froze 1/4 cup bits, then gave her a frozen one in her food bowl. She LOVED it!

Should I give him NOTHING for 12-24 hrs to rest his gut?...
I was reading some archive posts on diarrhea and that was a suggestion. Will that help?
I am by no means an expert, but
it can't hurt to give him bland diet of boiled white rice and boiled meat for a day or two.
I hope Bear is better soon!
i hope he is feeling better today
i am not a raw feeder, but when Rex got the runs badly from a edible nylibone, our vet said no solid food for at least 12 hours, then introduce a small amount of solids.

Bear still has the runs...
I have tried white boiled rice, more bones, pumkin, Immodium, Peptobismol. Yesterday it looked like it was getting better, king of an ice cream texture rather than plain liquid (sorry for the graphics). Today it is plain liquid again. I think I am going to take him to the vet. I just don't know what else to do.
The vets where I live think raw is absolutely NOT A GOOD THING. I am just afraid the vet is going to say " I told you so". I am afraid maybe Bear has bacteria infection from the raw. I get his meat at a good supermarket. Is it possible for me to have gotten a bad piece of chicken?
upset stomachs are not exclusive
to raw fed dogs. There is absolutely NO WAY ANY vet can say that they never see kibble fed dogs with diarrhea. No way.
If he DID get a "bad" piece of chicken, he wouldn't be the only one sick from it. He could just have a bug. Does he look sick? Letahrgic? Vomiting? Fever? Is he drinking?

Seriously all that stuff
would give me the runs. You have to pick 1 thing and stick with it. You can't give everything, everyone one has mentioned at once. That is a sure fire way to make it worse.
Dogs intestines are much shorter then humans which is the reason they rarely get things like ecoli. What goes in comes out quickly.
I hope he is getting better and the vet was able to determine something.
He vomited foam yesterday...
I caught him drinking water yesterday, which I was grateful for. He does look a little lethargic, not as playful as usual, just sleeping. The diarrhea has been since Monday afternoon.
a vet visit is probably a good idea
the poor guy. I hope he feels better soon. Just tell your vet that unless he has conclusive proof that it is his raw diet, AND can guarantee a kibble diet could not cause the same symptoms, to back off the food and concentrate on what it really is making him sick.

Thanks for the advice....
We have an appointment with the vet at 2:40. I will keep you guys updated.
