My son took his 9 month old bulldog, Maverick to ER vet last night because his face started swelling up. Eyes, nose, etc. He had given him 50 ml benedryl when this started but it wasn't helping.
They said they thought he was bitten by insect or stung. Gave him a shot of dexamthozone and one of diphenhydramine.
He just called me and suddenly Maverick is now developing what he describes as very red, weeping spots on face and his nose and eye wrinkles have become extremely red and "oozy". This all came on within 1/2 hr.
He called ER vet back and they said he needs to be seen either tonight again there or tomorrow at our regular bulldog vet.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Is it a emergency that he should take him back to ER tonight or can he wait till tomorrow to go to his regular vet?
Right now he is watching him carefully and if he continues to get worse will definitely take him to ER.

It sounds to me like a response to what ever he was given...
Or to the initial cause itself. A bite, sting, etc, but I haven't ever heard of that response. I know others will have better thoughts for you, I wish I knew more about this stuff. I WILL be praying for him though. If at all possible, they need to try to get their regular vet to see him. ER vets just aren't really good at specialized medicine, and that is what he needs right now. They are good for breaks and hits, not things like this. I personally would wait if at all possible....maybe call their vet and just see if they can get in on an emergency basis tonight or first thing in the morning.

It sounds like these spots could be where he was bitten/ stung
On yesterday.
Does he seem uncomfortable? Trying to scratch the spots?
Is his face swelling or has his breathing changed?
If there is no swelling and he doesn't seem bothered by these spots, I would give him 2-3 benadryl depending on his weight. Also, I would put some hydrocortisone cream on the sores.
If there is any swelling or his breathing changes, go straight to the Vet.
Ants...could he have gotten into ants??
That could explain the multiple spots, especially if they were fire ants. I would do just what Jacinda said... And watch his breathinf like a hawk all night.

That's what I was thinking too Amy
Something that could have bitten him multiple times.
And most dogs have a violent reaction to ants.
At least that is my personal experience and also what I have heard.

Can u post pics?
Hi the is mavericks papa
Hi all and thanks for the help
His breathing is good and in all this that has seemed to stay pretty good throughout this ordeal. I Got everywhere pretty well dried out just repeatedly dapping some Tp and then packed everywhere i could with Otomax. He's been about 45 minutes now and seems to be staying pretty dry and not lookin quite so bad ( not really great either though). He really doesn't seem to be fussing with it much now and is just laying down on his couch. His swelling was mostly down today and i though he was looking like he was getting back to normal. Then about an hour and a half ago he started fussing with it for just literally a minute then came up to me and was just soaked an oozing. Most of it really was colorless and not thick at all, but it was coming out like crazy, i would get him dry adn then just have to start over again cause he was soaked again. As of right now i'm going to try to hold out till morning and get him up to out bulldog specific vet in the morning as i don't really like a general emergency vet getting to much into him as a bulldog. If his condition deteriorates i will take hime in without question though as the emergency vet is 27 hour.
I'm going to try to attach a pic so let me know what you think.

That looks like multiple bites or stings....
Could he have gotten into ants? Maybe a plant of some sort like Stingning Nettle could do that. I would hold out and go see your Bully vet in the morning. Best of luck, and prayers coming.

Where do you live?
Are bugs and plants out where you live? It soudls like insect stings or maybe ants. Do you have fire ants or sand fleas or the like? It looks uncomfortable but if he's breathing OK, eating, drinking and napping, I think he'll be OK until you can get him to the vet tomorrow. Please let us know what's happening. Post what happens on the main board, too.
I live in MIchigan
I live in southern michigan.
I have never seen any fire ants or sand fleas around, but that's definately not saying they couldn't be out there. He is always on a leash with me outside, I would have thought if something like that attacked him he would have let me know, but it's hard to say there for sure. I live in a VERY old home ( 1850's) and there are lots of spiders around so that is kinda of the direction i am leaning right now.
Again thank you all for the help and concern
I know brown recluse spiders can cause problems like that...
we have them around here along with black widows. How is he doing today?
I thought about Brown Recluse....
Wasn't sure it would have been this outcome with multiple bits from one though.
I found one in my butcher block one day recently. Freaked me out:-(

mav today
Hi there this is Nick , Lonna's son and maverick's papa
He was doing okay this morning , still very red and damp. I got him up to the bully vet this morning and we've got him on quite a assortment of meds. He got very infected very quickly from where he was all swolen up so bad. But Dr Carpenter says he should be good as new here in a few weeks, and much better then now in a few days.
Again thanks for the help and concern
Nick and Maverick
Good to hear...
Glad to hear Mav is doing better. It's scary to have to go through things like that w/our bullies - I hope he gets better soon!

Glad he got to his normal vet...
And that he is doing some better. Please keep us posted on how Maverick is doing the next couple of weeks, would you? Now you are a part of our family here, you can't possibly leave us guessing!

Thank you all so much for concern & assistance!!!
It is so nice to have this wonderful community of bulldog lovers to turn to when we have concerns!
We are glad that Maverick could get in this morning to our regular vet whom is a fabulous vet that specializes in bulldogs.
I know that there are many like our family, that really appreciate all the info we gather from this forum.
Because it may be helpful to someone else I wanted to add a bit to my son Nick's post. Dr. Carpenter beleives that it is highly likely that the initial reaction and swelling was caused by a brief accidental encouter that Maverick had earlier on Saturday on his way outside with a piece of old kitchen carpet that had been recently removed. He suspects the old padding had dust mites that had caused the allergic reaction.
