My 6 year old bullie has had numerous medical issues. However, right now we are dealing with a stinky portion behind her tail. We have tried neosporin and it seems to work temporarily but gets bad again. She has also been having skin issues for years that no vet seems to know much about. She loses patches or hair, it's stinky then she goes on antibiotics and it gets better temporarily then breaks out again. It's never-ending it seems!
Have they ever
expressed her anal glands?
What are you feeding her?
I've found that a good grain free food helps a lot with skin problems. We use Taste of the Wild pacific stream which is salmon and sweet potato. There are other brands, but the fish seems to cause less skin allergies. We have two that have tail 'pockets' and what I do is buy the cotton squares and spray them with Malaseb spray ( you can also use peroxide) and get into it as far as I can. Then I use a clean one to dry it. Keeping it dry is the key , some people squirt gold bond powder in there, but it can get gunky that way. I don't think Neosporin will work because it will keep it moist and that's the opposite of what you want. If it's really raw you could use Desitin diaper rash cream for a few days to help it heal. We do the cleaning routine every day, although ours aren't too bad since they've been on the salmon food.
I am going to agree with Kathy here....
I think an allergy is your most likely suspect right now. Are you feeding a good grain free food? There are numerous ones out there that are really good. I am also on Taste of the Wild right now, I just switched from Blue Buffalo Limited. Blue Buff is a good food but one of my non-bulldog girls was having a problem and so I am trying something else.
The tail pocket could be very deep and if you aren't cleaning all the way up under, it will not ever get healed. I put Sophie is my bath tub and I have an extendable shower head I pull down to use. I spray into the tail pocket really well, then use a good dog shampoo to clean the pocket out well. I have surgical gloves and use my hands to do the cleaning, that way I can get all the way into the pocket each time. I usually soap up twice and spray it out really well both times. I dry it as well as I can with paper towels, they absorb better than a bath towel. I use Desitin after every butt bath...it gets the moisture all the way out and she is then comfortable for about 5 days until I clean ehr again. It is very important to clean that pocket all teh way up in regularly to keep infections out.
