help- kibby is breathing funny...

Dear all,

long time no write, sorry, i have been so busy. anyways, my 7 yr old girl bully kibby just started breathing funny today.  She has not eaten anything out of the ordinary lately. When she breathes out thru her mouth, its loud... like it almost sounds like she is snoring but awake! She is still playful, hungry, and everything else is normal. When she breathes out of her nose, she is normal.  Its been hot here lately, so I have been keeping her inside, and also we dont make them do too much activity. Its like a long, gruffy sigh, when she breathes out. Do bully's get sore throats? I did notice that she was hacking this morning, but it was not anything out of the ordinary, then her usual morning hacking. we tried to look down her throat, but we can't and don't see anything unusual, just the usual kinda flem.

Its like she is taking extra long breaths when breathing out.. its only worse when she is excited and panting... there is maybe a little bit of drool, but not much at all.

I am trying to figure out how to post a video so you can see what i am talking about. i have been giving her ice cream and ice cubes in case its a sore throat... or maybe she was hacking too hard today and tore something in there? foxtail? we haven't been to the park in about a week though. elogated palate? we never had any issues or dealt with anything like that. she does take a claritin everyday for allergies.

her bully dr. is not in the office until tuesday, and i have an appt set up with someone else in his office tmrw.. but i am afraid they won't know about bully breathing issues as much and just order a bunch of tests left and right, i would rather wait until her dr. is back if possible... do you think it may be ok to wait, if she is eating, pooing, sleeping normal?

any thoughts on what it could be? thanks for all your help!

Has she been around other dogs?

Maybe exposed to kennel cough?  You could try try some lemon juice (which they all hate) or Sprite to see if it breaks up any phlegm.  As long as she doesn't sound like she struggling to breathe, you should be okay.  it's possible her allergies are worse or the heat is bothering her.  It is possible for them to get upper respiratory infections, and if that was the case, she would need antibiotics.  If she starts getting lethargic, I would get her in right away.

nope, not around other dogs

plus Kibby generally keeps to herself or just hangs out with Gabby, she is prissy like that! she did have pneumonia about 2 months ago, round of antibiotics and it got another xray and she got clearance, hopefully its not that again. usually when she gets pnuemonia (2 times already) she doesnt eat and gets mopey. this is just a really weird loud breathing, not even panting.. just sounds like she is snoring when she is awake. i was thinking to try to give her another claritin or just maybe it was the heat as well.

someone on the other forum said it may be laryngeal saccules, so i am looking into that now. i never had any problems with her breathing, trachea, or palate, so all this is new to me. i have always considered myself one of the lucky bully owners who has never had to have any kind of surgery to fix anything... knock on wood! my appt is late tmrw, so i will see how she is doing because if need be, i will bring her in... gosh, i wish he bully dr. worked on sats! thanks so much for your help!

Well, if she had pneumonia in the past...

I would definitely have them check her out.  Let us know what they say.

i will , thanks!

since kibby seemed to be doing a little better today, not struggling to breathe, but still the funny noise on occassion, everything else normal, i opted not to take her in because it was too hot... i plan to keep her cool and calm thru the holiday and have an appt scheduled with the bully dr. on tuesday. luckily she doesnt care about loud fireworks or anything like that. will keep you posted.. thanks for your help!  i really hope its just the weather, a cold, or allergies or even just age! its one thing to learn to fall asleep with her snoring, but having her breathe constantly like that would be crazy! i pray its anything that requires surgery!!
