HELP! Allergies? Red, raw scabby chin

So, James is having symptoms kind of like the post below about the scratching around the eye folds, but his is under his neck.  He is red and raw and freaking me out.  My husband sopke to the vet who said to keep the area clean and use Neosporin but it looks awful.  ANy bully had experience with this?

Also, Tony constantly licks him, could that be the cause?

It could be from the licking

What kind of water bowl do you use? You should be using stainless steel bowls as anything else can trap bacteria.

I would clean the area with witch hazel and then apply some diaper rash cream to help control moisture.

thanks jacinda

we have stainless and ceramic, so i will narrow down to stainless.  i'll try the witch hazel/ diaper rash ointment combo too-- at worst it will at least keep tony off him.  from what i have read here about allergies, it sounds like that??

I wouldn't say allergies at this point

If that's the only raw/red spot. If he was itchy all over or in multiple places, then I would be more likely to think it was allergies. I would try to keep the other dog from licking him and you can even spray bitter apple on the area as a deterrent if necessary.

couple questions...

Do you have any pictures to post of James and the current issues?  That'll help us get a better understanding of what you mean by red/raw areas.  I do think Jacinda's recommendation for the witch hazel and diaper cream is the best thing you can do for him right now.  And I do think you should keep the two dogs separated when you're not home and able to prevent the licking.

I also think you should be drying him off with a cloth towel each time after he drinks to help the area stay clean and dry and hopefully heal with the help of the diaper cream.  I also agree with Jacinda, if James isn't acting "itchy" I would not give him any Benadryl (or any other allergy medication).  I know you live in Hawai'i so traditional "seasonal" allergies might not be the problem.

Do you know if any local plants have recently released pollen or something of that nature?  I don't know enough about your area to have any "suspects" that immediately come to mind.

Ya-- I'll post pics when I get home

this evening.  I was thinking of bitter spray but since its raw I am afraid it will burn.  We did the witch hazel...he has been itching it though...can he have anti-itch hydrocortizone cream?

I would think so

I think there are a couple of different diaper ointments out there...i'm sure one of them will have some anti-itch properties.  You usually can't go wrong with the original and old school A&D Ointment in the brown tube.  It's super simple and very mild.

Another thought...perhaps some Bag Balm would help soothe and protect the area (instead of diaper ointment)...

Does it look like this or further down on his neck?

HOLLAND75's picture

no-- further down.

he has some zits on his chin, but this is all down his neck and larger, brush-burn looking stuff.  its killing me to be at work when he has this!

Maybe he's getting hot spots...

the remedy for those is dab it with plain brown Listerine, let dry and put gold bond medicated powder on it.  Sometimes they get them from not being completely rinsed after a bath among other things.

Agree with Kathy

the constant licking and keeping him damp can cause hot spots.

HOLLAND75's picture

I didnt know that was the cause...

i wish it would heal so i could spray him with something to keep tony offa him!
