Heartworms resistant to meds

I thought this article was VERY interesting, especially if you live in the south central US. They have identified a genetic variation in some heartworms that makes them resistant to the pesticides currently used to kill them.

The article is from a holistic vet, and as many of you know I do take a complete holistic approach with Audrey. I live in NC, in one of the red zones on the heartworm incidence map, and Audrey is heartworm negative. I am not trying to tell anyone what to do with their dogs, just saying that it IS possible to be successfully heartworm free without the pesticides.

However, the holistic vet in the article is NOT ADVOCATING stopping chemical heartworm preventatives! She does offer some good advice for helping keep your dog heartworm free as safely as possible.

here is an article from DVM. They basically say, "yes there are resistant heartworms but use the current protocal anyways." Not real helpful.
